Well I joined "The Snake" hall of shame yesterday when the front end folded under braking. Thought I had traction left as the rear was still quite planted. Probably was just late trailing off the brakes. Could have been a pressure issue as the front was feeling a little spongy. I'll check. Glad the guy comin' up the hill was paying attention. Could have been a disaster. Plastics are junk, but I rode the bike home.Taylor Made Racing case covers saved the motor. My Motoport kevlar saved my ass.

At least you and the bike came out in pretty much one piece. I was just through that area today.

Well since it looks like you have some experience in this area, would you wear an alpinestars textile jacket? I've been doing research and it looks like for street riding under 70-80 mph it will do its job but I do like to push it and its easy to go over that with these bikes. What do you think? What would you do? it'll be easier to swing the t-gp-r air but the new jaws perforated jacket looks like it will keep me cool(ish) I do live in the Florida keys with all the idiot drivers.

Oops sorry for the hi-jacking

I've been through there at least a hundred times. Never a problem. Just goes to you show you that you always need to be paying attention and wearing the gear.

Alpinestars - well I don't know that jacket in particular but - I have never seen a mass produced textile jacket that I would wear. Every single one that I have seen has worthless armor and contains polyester which, when heated by friction in a crash, melts into you skin. Don't be taken in by fancy fabric marketing names. Look at the material tag in the jacket. If it says Nylon and polyester, my advice is to walk away. Do a Google search. You will find some hideous picts. The US Marines have banned Underarmour and similar because of this in Iraq.
The Motoport Kevlar is expensive, but worth every penny. One ER visit to have the plastic peeled out of your skin will more than cover the cost. I've been down at well over 100 MPH in this suit... the same suit. It is still intact and functioning. I will send it back to have some of the velcro on the sleeve replaced.
Of course, this is all just my opinion.

and see this is why i ask questions before purchasing things. Thank you, which of their lines is it that you suggest? Would you suggest a perforated leather jacket or the motoport kevlar? ive been dumb and riding in jeans and an icon field armor vest and icon short touchscreen gloves. i just bought a new arai helmet so thats my best gear so far. i guess i should start a thread in the riding gear section...

Rob, you're not doing much to change your title of "The man who falls a lot".

Get with the program bro!

You gonna be at Willow in a couple weeks?

LOL - Yeah, some people will do anything to be in the record books.
Yes I will be at Willow. Assuming I survive until then.

Tires - well that's a big part of the story. they were Dunlop DOT 211 GPA - takeoffs. Still have good rubber, but defiantly in the last third of their life, which for me is about a week. I planned to run them until I had time to pick up new this week. I had been riding for about an hour and I had worked up slowly and tested the grip until I felt that they were reliable at street pace, but as I said the front felt a little mushy. I checked them about half way through and the wear looked good/even. However after the crash, I noticed an odd texture on the right side, which is the side on which I went down. Could be that it happened as the tire was sliding before it let go.

One lesson to take away from this is the danger of going back and forth from track to street. I've gotten so used to the awesome braking of the 1190RS, that I think I just didn't realize how close to the limit I was on my street bike going down hill. The whole ride felt pretty much like a stroll in the park and I did not think I was pushing the limit.

Aren't most race tires designed to only go through a couple heat cycles? If so, maybe that was part of the problem.

Could have been a contributing factor, but Dunlop DOT GPA's are less problematic with heat cycles than most other tires. It's really more about how much rubber is left and therefore how they will generate and hold heat. A brand new tire might have held, but I think this is more about rider error than anything else. I was just on the brakes too hard for too long.

Glad to see you walked away and rode the bike home. Incidents like this show you how important good gear is. Riding gear is definitely an area you dont want to skimp on.

Rod, I'm very sorry to hear this. I'm glad you walked away from it.

I know that corner very well. It looks "easy" but it is actually not. Many people crash there (usually going up). Every time I hit that corner (going up or down) I always take it a bit easy. I'd hate to bin my bike in front of all them cameras! LOL! Seriously though, I'm glad you're ok and your 1125R will live to ride another day.

Thanks Ken. Yeah, I'm really bummed about the way things turned out with the AMA effort. We had some great (and frustrating, heart breaking) times with some great guys like yourself. I really miss the team work and spirit. It really was a once in a lifetime experience.
