Hi all,

After unfortunately crashing my first 1125CR in 2011, I bought a second one in June '12. I bought it with approximately 2000km (1250 miles) on the odo and I suspected the first oil was still in. So I changed it right away. I took the effort to drop the screen filter and there was nothing out of the ordinary to see there. I filled it up with the Motul 300V 10W40 that TM here in Holland recommends.

Yesterday I decided to do some winter maintenance and I replaced the oil again. The odo reads 7500km (4700 miles) now, it is a litte quick, but I ride the bike quite hard, so I like the idea of its oil being 'fresh'.
I also pulled the screen filter yesterday, but what I found didn't really amuse me...

Here are some pictures:

There are no noises or knocks in the engine and it runs very sweet. During clutchless upshifts I've had the occasional false neutral a few times, and when that occurs, unfortunately, the bike drops into the next gear in a fraction of a second all by itself. This happens so quick that I am not able to close the throttle and the "drop in gear" is accompanied by a very large BANG, obviously... I suspect these pieces of junk are related to that. Maybe something with the clutch assembly...?

Anyhow, has anyone here ever seen pieces of scrap as big as these in their oil? Does anyone recognize some of the pieces?

Looks like the epoxy they use to seal the edges of the magnet cover, on the alternator rotor.
Another plastic part that sometimes sheds is the cam chain guides, I think that's black tho.

First photo looks like gasket material.

Second and third photos looks like shaft/gear spline/teeth. Look metallic. Are they hard bits?

It's the epoxy from the rotor. Its light brown in color. I just cleaned it out from the strainer and still riding the bike

Does someone have a clear picture of the rotor and where this epoxy should be?

As I said, it really looks like cast aluminum. I made some additional pictures.

The brown/yellow-ish discoloration seems to be coming from the oil, my bet is that these pieces once were nice and grey...

Yeah, quite easily with a sharp Victorinox knife. It is quite brittle.

You mean like this stuff?

I probably get this crap in my screen around every other oil change. (I change every 5-10 hours)

Scares the piss out of me.

I've been asking around what it could be. No one seemed to have a guess other than taking the motor apart to take a look.

Like you, I felt like it was Mg or Al, not epoxy, but I guess it could be a metalized expoy like a JB Weld.

Light brown color, yes...

That seems to be exactly the same scrap and indeed, it could be a JB Weld kind of metal-ish epoxy.

5-10 hours? You race the bike I reckon?

If it aint broke don't fix it. More than probably casting related and if it's not making noise there really isn't much can be done that would change anything. If it was something that mattered I think something would have given by now.

Yes, it's a DSB-Spec motor built by EBR.

I have the slipper clutch set so soft there's a ton of debris in the oil in a very short order. I should probably run less expensive oil, but Motul 300V has consistently been the recommendation I've received for racing.

Smells nice, at least. Like Bananas.

Man, this thread has really given me a huge piece of mind and solved a lingering quandary of mine. I thought I knew just about everything with these machines... goes to show one there's always something new.

I'm quite used to short intervals and hour counters, I rode Supermoto for a few years. That is why I am refreshing the Buell a bit to soon as well... Piece of mind and such...

And you don't want to leave the Motul 300V around in the kitchen when you have kids... That's for sure! ; )

Thanks guys for the help finding the cause to this problem. :-)

I've never had one of these motors NOT do this.

I've owned (5) 1125r bikes and one of them is on its 3rd motor. In all cases, I've seen these little bits.

What is the purpose of this epoxy ? Is there a problem with the rotor after it has fell out ?
ie should we re-do it ?

It's there to seal the magnet shield to the rotor.
<edit> It's a special metal(µ-metal) that has a high magnetic permeability... it's "transparent" to magnetism.
Not a good thing to have a sheet of metal moving around while spinning at 11k rpm.
I would not try to re-seal the edges myself now, too much unknown...

I've checked my screen a few times, thinking cam chain guides, and found nothing so far.
Both bikes I've changed rotors on had epoxy missing in a few places.

Still plan on opening up Loretta if I ever get any spare time...

Z

Jim, my '08 has never done that. I have dropped the oil screen recently.

So has anybody that has done the rotor exchange for the oil drilled mod had their old rotor turned down as an exchange item?
