I acquired a what I thought was the 17x3.4 magnesium wheel (used) that EBR has on their website. However, after getting the wheel, it says it's 3.5, not 3.4. To add to the confusion is says "Race Use Only"....but it also says "DOT". Just curious what I'm working with here. Any way to know for sure it's magnesium? I put it on the scale- w/ bearings and the spacer it came in right around 7lbs. I don't have a stock wheel with no tire on it to compare weights. My spare wheels already have tires on them.

I'm almost 100% sure it's a 3.5 because no one makes a 3.4 to my knowledge.

What color?

It's black. The only reason I was confused was because the wheel on the EBR site is listed as 3.4- so I was thrown off when this one was 3.5. I was also a bit confused since it said "Race Use Only" but also had the DOT mark in the casting. I was thinking that the other front EBR wheel I had did not have DOT in the casting.

The .1 in width doesn't matter to me one way or another. I am just trying to make sure I didn't get hosed. But, like you, I've never heard of the 3.4 wheel either- outside of what EBR shows.

The "Race Use Only" could refer to it being Race Use Only qualified. Race wheels are not as strong as road wheels. They don't need to hold up against curbs, potholes, rocks and the vageries of life on the street. How DOT figures in this I have no idea.

I know what race use means and why they aren't supposed to be a streetable wheel. Most, but certainly not all, race wheels that I've seen (I know much more about car applications than bikes though) do not have the DOT certification. If they aren't meant to be on the street, the manufacturer wouldn't go through the hassle of getting the DOT cert.

My guess is they are the ordinary cast Mg wheels from the Buell Race program and were cast in the Al molds (hence the DOT number) with the extra RACE ONLY text added.

I'm not sure, but I think my Mg wheels have both a RACE ONLY and DOT number. I'll have to look next time I'm at the track.

That works for me- that's what I was hoping to get.
