Hey All,

I'd like to introduce myself to the forum. I work on the biz development side of auto refinish industry. I have now been doing this most of my adult life so I know a great deal about the collision industry although I frequently wonder what it would have been like to travel with the circus..I love to “tinker” with vehicles, drive them then make a couple of clams just to do it all over again. I've been doing this since '01 mostly with air cooled 911's which is how I was able to survive as a college student and the entry level jobs that lead to my current career field. I grew up fixing and flipping cars with my father who is diesel technician at the airline with the two lettered aluminum finished planes. I consider myself slightly better than a novice mechanic but I think my porsche repair resume would disagree. I do some minor body and fender – welding, stud, hammer, filler and paint. In short I love motor-sports and I get paid to hustle/sell/convince.

I have been reading old posts and I do mean old going back to the beginning. Against better judgment I bought a 2010 Buell 1125r this summer. I was in the market for my second Ducati, my first was a 620 and this round was to be a '09 S4RS. You boys now know the deal - the price was just about twice what I paid for the Buell so I decided to make life a bit more challenging and I opted to go with a really clean 1125r that came up in the craigslist search for “Ducati” LOL that bastard. I ended up buying that bike from the original owner who said he at the time was in the media and was one of the few that bought it at the fire sale. He seldom rode the bike accumulating just over 3500 miles before I took it off his hands. The bike was in immaculate condition. Its was perfect for the project- yes I said project.

I wont BS you people nor do I want any lip, but I bought this bike to clone the Magpul Ronin. I love the look of the Ronin and I especially loved that it was shelved by Magpul. - So I thought!

I spent the last couple of months looking into the mods I would make to replicate the appearance of the front end. I was quite happy with the solution I came up with. While I was looking for some High Res pictures to blow up for the wall of the garage around September of this year when I ran across and article about the Ronin and how Magpul was in process of building about 40 of these. I tracked down the phone number for the owner and spoke the man directly. He was in fact building a limited run and its a full-time operation run out of Colorado. It was a this point and lost all interest in cloning the motorcycle. The weekend after that (last weekend in September) I was riding with a friend near my home when the “voltage” warning came on and about 35 minutes later after clearly seeing voltage jumping and dropping the bike got me home and failed to start again. I bought the rotor upgrade, seal and nut (nut from HD dealer) from EBR that following Tuesday after calling HD support and then the dealer for the west side of LA which doesn't even merit a mention because the service guy laughed at me when I asked him what kind of support they could offer. A week after that I ended up getting stuck with end of summer sales campaigns, sales training, and SEMA so I parked the bike in the man cave and left it alone until this Friday night November 9th!

I bought spool adapters for my current pit-bull but since I had it up in rafters I failed to see that design doesn’t lend itself from a rear Ducati Monster stand to an 1125r since its got a horizontal beam connecting the wheels. I found some on CL so I'll probably pick one up during the week. I will probably order a “crankshaft lock tool” if I'm not able to rent one or buy one from BWB.

I've decided to replace the VR with the CE605 and rewind the stator. I can't figure out who is the right company to go with from the posts so I might just try someone local (ive seen the post with 4). I figure the combination of the Rotor, Stator, & VR will prevent this from happening again. So once this bike is road worthy again, the plan is to customize the heck out of the bike removing the front fairing and replacing with some simple looking dual setup that will probably have the VR inside similar to the Ronin, removing intake pucks for some sort of modded carb type air cleaner, clip-ons, and 1190rs or 1190rs type of rear seat section. I need help figuring out what to do with all those wires, relays, & battery..

Anyhow, If you gents can help me with a couple of things I would greatly appreciate it.

I could use the following:

1. Service manual – does someone have a used one? etc
2. referral to local stator winder in Socal.
3. I could use a hand- anyone in North OC work on the side?

welcome! Sounds like a fun project. I thought the Ronin was a great looking concept, so looking forward to seeing your progress.

I know there are some pdf's rolling about, but unsure if TOS allow asking for such things - just FYI. Someone may PM you, but probably not something you should ask for...

Good luck and welcome!

Welcome Socialcrusier,

I feel your pain. My stator also recently died, the bike was still under the extended warranty however, and it's still at the HD dealership getting fixed.

I have a PDF of all the manuals, however at 123MB it is not suitable for emailing!

I live in Australia so can't give you a hand.

Another option is Twinmotorcycles.nl - great guys and they have a full stator fix including the EBR upgraded oil jet (i think). Not sure what all you need to send them to get this done - look for Easy's post recently about this.

Nuts4mc, i'm not looking to be a guinea pig with stator people, thanks but I was looking for someone who already has done this job on a Buell 1125r that is located in Southern California.

No Rice- I already bought the upgraded EBR rotor, so I have to take the stator out to replace the rotor - why would I want to buy the '08 part? whatever.

Guys- I really appreciate the help and support thus far. I'm surprised so many of you came forward with repair guide help.

I'm currently looking on CL for a used rear stand as I have the spool adapters but I suspect they might scratch the frame.. I found a front choke which looks really sturdy but I wonder if that is enough to support the bike while i work on it. I've already been crushed by transmission once- never again! I see pitbull has the little rubber deals that hold the swing arm but at $160 it kills me to buy another damn pitbull stand. I'm a craftsman type guy with a snap-on here and there- if you catch my drift.

Hey No Rice,

Do you know anywhere that sells new 08 stators and rotors? Or do you just have to get a second hand one off ebay?

Welcome
I purchased a cheap spool stand. What I have found is if you don't bend the ears out, the spool holder will gouge your swing arm while raising. This happened to me with more than one spool stand.
For the stator, here's a thread worth looking at

Good luck

I have FR/RR Pitbulls - super nice set.

But if looking for a less $ option - check out the T-Rex stands. I think you can get both FR/RR for about the cost of one PB.

Easy's post:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/697724.html?1352814918

And here it is in the webshop - 208 Euro ($265'ish).
http://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/artikel.asp? guid=YXHFSC&aid=5295&cid=0&s=&a=&aname=Buell_1125_ 09_Stator_rewind_

shipping to/from Netherlands may be a bit $ and add additional downtime, but hard to find someone i'd trust more!

I've used the front wheel chock from Baxley Trailers. It's sturdy enough for working on the bike. But you can't take the wheels off!

I live in Colorado and met a couple of the guys from Magpul.
I have a few pix of the Ronin at higher res than what is online.
PM me and I'll send you some to your e-mail addy.

They had their services done at High Country HD/B when I worked there.
Also ran into one of their employees on a ride into the mountains, got some more pix then.

They had more than a few issues with the radiator on the girder forks... girder??? my 1948 Indian Chief had a girder fork.

As far as rotor/stator sets go, the 08 set has a lower output but virtually no reliability issues.
e.g. I have an 08 "R" with 28k miles. Original battery, R/R, stator/rotor.
09 alternator has a higher output so if you need extra volts/amps, go there and do the EBR rotor and maybe a CE605 R/R... which you've done.

Hope you get as attached to yours as I am to mine...

For the Pit Bull, you can do what a few of us have done, get a couple blocks of wood and a bottle jack and widen the arms out an inch or so. Works like a charm.

As far as your bike of choice. I've ridden a 2009 S4RS. When everything is right, the 1125 is a far more fun machine to ride. It just feels much more nimble and more powerful.

I have yet to iron out the stator issues since I am still under the extended warranty. Combined with standard piss poor HD service it is very frustrating. But, the stator (three times), a weeping clutch, a dead radiator fan and the ever present excessive heat, are the issues I've had in over 3 years. Unfortunately it gets parked whenever the air temp is above 85 deg F because the heat output makes it virtually unrideable if you don't live in the boonies.

It is a seriously fun machine. I think I just need to track prep it and get the SOB off the road and then everything will be fine. Then I just need a good road bike. Anybody ridden a Ninja 1000?

Guys-
Thanks for the input on the stands. I should have just dealt with the Buell - pit-bull stand. With the spool adapters from Pit-bull for the current stand and the harbor freight rear stand and front choke, I’ve spent $110 combined for three bike supports one of which works- the front choke. The original Pit-Bull is my brothers which I totally forgot about so it not that huge of a bummer. The adapters will probably go to eBay with a bunch of misc stuff that I might list this weekend. The aluminum rear stand from HF is cool but the bike is slightly wider. I think I’ll just take this to a TIG welding shop. I don’t have any welding equipment at the moment although I’m in the market for a Miller 140 auto set or something similar, Hobart 140 but the upgrade with aluminum rail blah blah.. you get it- a cheap one! Higher output isn’t an option..

So, I removed the VR yesterday then I took off the cover for the rotor/stator. The directions say to remove the screws holding the stator, but what about the wire? Holy smokes, that wire goes behind the frame and boy is that sucker tight- I’m about to take the screws off the stator, guess I’ll find out momentarily.
Anyhow, can someone let me borrow the crankshaft locking tool? I’m new here so but I have a paypal account where id be happy to secure a deposit while I have your tool..
Also, I don’t have an alternator rotor remover and I would like to get one today. Where can I buy one of these locally? Sears Craftsman tool? Pep Boys? I want to take the stator out today so I can mail it someplace to get it redone with high temp goodies..

BTW- NUTS4MC

I called Rickystator- he doesnt do sportbikes. Not that it was a huge waste of time, but a waste none the less. Listen, I can google "stator repair" too. The problem is there isnt't one go to guy in the US, and i'll be damned if I ship anything to europe for repair.

Once I get this bad boy in my hands i'll begin the phone campaign- "Hey there you rewind Buell Stators, maybe what's a buell"..

Freight_dog, so far I think I solved my heat issues by installing the EBR ECM and switching to Amsoil. The Amsoil change from SYN3 has allowed me... I kid you not... to actually touch the engine with my hand after a long ride! Mind you I can't keep it there more than a second, but compared to the way it was before when in the summer I'd have to get off the bike at stoplights, the difference seems to be night and day. As an added bonus, the boiling fuel issue seems to have gone away too, however, I'll reserve judgment on that one until next summer when the weather really heats up, but I have hope! : D

Hi Captjoe, did you mean to hijack? LOL

Here are some updated pictures! I have not removed the stator yet but I did remove the front fairing and speedo. I'm excited again!

I'm thinking about the radiator in the front again..damn it! Also, I love how clean the exhaust is on the ronin. Anyone have one of these? It appears to be free spirts. I don't care for names and I actually was thinking to have someone make these up for me since I didn't get a reply to an email from freespirts and the UK company that has them on the site wants nearly $2k for them. I figure I can get two mufflers from a Ducati 748 or some other duck that had those small carbon fiber under seat exhaust..

thoughts?

This is what I followed when rewinding my stator myself, but I have the fortune of living about 40 minutes away from the author. He and I both rewound mine, and both his and mine are working perfectly so far. Both of us are using CE605 regulators and removed harness upgrades. I will report more on mine later...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have heard that exhaust and it sucks big time. Yes, it's the Free Spirits 2-2.
It needs an X-pipe before the cans.
Dean Adam's RT-4 is similar looking, with an X-pipe and is the MOST vicious sounding exhaust made for the 1125. IMO

Magpul had heat issues with their up-front-radiator.

Socalcruiser, never say hijack to a pilot!!! LOL

Sorry, didn't mean to go into a different topic. I was just putting forth my two cents that if they bike begins to have heat issues, maybe changing to another oil might help. Amsoil or not, there might be a different brand that works better in dissipating that heat.

You know that Magpul looks like a Mack Truck up front. MMmmmm..... LOL!

I can see why they would have overheating issues. It has only ONE radiator when the bike needs two to increase the radiator surface area and dissipate more heat.

That's who did mine... seemed to be good quality. I have about 1,000 miles on it with the EBR rotor and the harness upgrade removed. Charges around 14.3V all the time.
