I seem to be getting killed by this stator problem. Taken it to the dealer twice now a third time for stator/electrical issues. They just replaced the stator again but it didn't last long before the bike died again. I see this forum for the stator but seems to be so much going on it's hard to follow and understand just what is the issue, Stator, charing harness all the above? About to take it back to the dealer for the third time. Thanks for listening/reading.

2009 models have a different charging spec than 2008 models - the 2009 models are prone to more charging problems than 2008 models.
If you can work with the dealer (he's probably tired of seeing the bike)
a) you need to complete several things at once to help the bike increase it's reliability.
b)the rotor (the part that mounts to the crank with all the magnets in it) needs to be modified at EBR - I doubt if warrantee will cover this...you need to pay for this in order to add a "cooling jet" to the rotor to spray oil onto the stator in order to keep it from cooking the windings. The removal of the rotor requires some special tools: a locking tool and a big torque wrench - again the dealer may not want to pay for these...you need to work with him to make this important part of the fix complete.
c) a new stator
d) possibly a new voltage rectifier/regulator - the design uses the aluminum sub frame as a heat sink - the VR must be tight against that mount - an alternate method is to extend the harness and mount it outside the body work out by the license plate- or somewhere cooling air can get to it - an after market approach is also available - search the sub forum for info.
e) the condition of the big grey connector can be causing issues check the wiring and contacts - resistance at that connector can cause problems both with charging and the stator.
f) the sub harness was an attempt on '09 models to dis-connect a phase of the stator to help keep it cool - the sub harness has a relay in the circuit that is marginal - if you use it- the relay needs to be inspected at an on going basis.
g) IMO - if the rotor mod is completed. a new stator is installed, and you relocate the VR or replace it - the sub harness is not needed...the cooling jet in the modified rotor will perform the job.
h) the stator is cooled by oil - the oil level is critical to the performance of not only the engine but the performance of the stator as well- how often do you check it?
i) IMO - the lead acid battery needs to be replaced with a Li-Ion type - the bike is much more reliable at starting.
j) IMO - the grounds are marginal in the harness design - or the connections are prone to disconnection - I ran a big 4 ga ground wire from the ground stud under the seat by the swing arm pivot - up and over the shock and down to the starter to help starting in the heat out here.( do a search in the forum - look for my "handle/name") check your ground connections (by the swing arm and up by the headstock) make sure they are tight and make sure the battery terminal connections are good and tight.
Hope I didn't overwhelm you with all this info...but if you enjoy the bike as much as I do - you'll be willing to spend some additional $$s to make it better...hope this helped.

there is a known heat issue,
the solutions are related to controlling the load hence the heat

the seemingly ultimate one is

A. get the stator re-wound with high temp wire ( the varnish is rated for higher temps )
B. get the EBR rotor modification ( oiling jet )
C. refit a CE605? series regulator( this turns the stator on and off as needed Vs shorting it to ground as do the stocker and the various other VR units )

The idea is to reduce the heat in the stator, make it more durable, and lessen the load ( which reduces the heat )

EBR is on the web
the 605 regulator is from roadstercycles
You will need to remove the rotor and stator for exchange and rework,

If you have an '08 check the electrical loads you are imposing // regulator

Thanks for the feedback.. Sounds like a lot to do for a problem that should not occur or at least be covered via warranty/parts? Any ideas if this fix will work and for how long?

Thanks Again

Does anyone know if HD is covering this stator problem under warranty? OR purchasing the upgraded rotor from EBR along with the nut and upgraded stator wound with the the correct wiring and all the other pieces that may be necessary to fix this obvious problem from the factory. Sounds like it's time to jump on the recall bandwagon if HD isn't doing anything about it. Covering their reputation alone should be enough to fix this issue one and for all? I absolutely love the bike over the other guys and want to keep it but not if it's going to cost me almost another grand to get this fixed when it was obviously a design flaw.

That happens, no worries, but stand up like a man sorry I mean company should and say yes, we overlook that, we'll fix it. END OF STORY

It should not be up to me or my fellow Buell Brothers to fix this obvious problem. Love you Twin, perhaps you can sell that solution to HD when they step up to the plate and act like MEN! or I'll have to bend over yet again and feel the burn as another Corporate Giant sticks it to the little guy.

I live in the MIddle East and I can tell you Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain have added hundreds if not thousands of police bikes to their inventory. I've seen them with my own eyes when I picked up my 1125R after the second attempt at fixing the stator issue and the guys were putting them together for shipment. So I know HD you are making money.

Enough said.

HD is going to do nothing but throw parts at it until your warranty expires. Yes, it is a bad scene and yes HD is grossly negligent, but c'est la vie!
What Nusts4mc said is spot on!

Labor could very well be an issue. After 2 tries with one dealer, I would try another dealer.

My original stator died a 2,000 miles. I have 16,000 on my first replacement stator, Latus HD did the work.

No offense Jonesgw but you're late to the party. Notice this sub-forum has over 7,000 post. And as far as HD is concerned, yes we are all named Ben Dover.
However consider that we are a very loyal bunch to the machine itself so it's worth the hassle of this stator issue.
I happened to be one of the few that spent $900 with EBR for the first update kit they offered which consisted of a new cover with an '08 style (eighteen smaller poles vs twelve larger) stator installed and a oil-holed rotor. I've not had issues with my r/r in just under 12,000 miles. I'm thinking the '08 stator and oil hole cooling should do me fine. I don't run any extra electric accessories so no charging worry for me. The '09 does put out more juice. Seemingly too much.

You are correct I'm late to the party as I though perhaps it won't happen to me. I've had my 1125R for two years with not really any issues until 6 months ago. Started paying more attention to the Stator feed. ; ).. Just burns me to have to spend the money for something that should be fixed by the HD. Agree with you, love the machine. More the principal of the matter than anything else.

Thanks again all for the feedback and the scraps from the party which I'm way late for.

Still a little confused about all the parts needed to fix/keep it at bay for a while but I'll go back through the post and try and make sense of it all. Not much of a mechanic but enough G2 to figure it all out. Duphuckincati, no offense taken. ; )

Jonesgw, I take solace knowing that EBR has done more on road race tracks in the last few years than HD ever did in the last few decades.
A current day David and Goliath story if there ever was one.

p.s. Nuts4mc has covered all of the bases.

BIG THANKS AGAIN to Nuts4mc for taking the time to post required fixes/should dos. Yep it was overwhelming but not ready to give up on it yet.

Much Appreciated!
