Got the suspension set last night, way better, but I'm maxed on the rear spring and it needs a bit more, and the fronts are near the max

Talking to my guy, need to do front springs and rear, but probably better to go a new rear shock that would have ring adjusters, not ramps, which makes a lot of sense to me. I know if I respring I'll end up between ramps anyway
EBR offers:

Showa race for $650
Ohlins TTX for $1265 (little rich for my needs)

I don't know if they will let me choose a spring or if I have to pay to respring. Anyone know?

Penske - $1100 plus
Elka - $1k ish

If I remember correctly, EBR let me choose which spring I wanted when I ordered my shock. But that was 2 years ago, things may have changed.
Bottom line is this: Springs are cheap. Get the length, damping characteristics and bling (er, I mean features) you want, then worry about the spring.

Showa is an excellent choice for a good price.

The Penske is the best choice regardless of cost.

IMHO.

Agree with both replies. And yes when ordering a 'custom' shock you 'should' be able to choose a spring. However they are cheap and you'll likely find that if you run more than one track you'll need several to choose from. If the tracks are far enough apart in style/layout you'll also likely need more than one shock body as well pref from the same vendor. Bottom line is there is no one size fits all even for the same bike/rider combo for all tracks and even different conditions on the same track.

EBR let me choose my spring/weight settings - that was a couple of years ago, though. Shoot them an email - -

I'll do an occasional track day, but not going to be a track junkie at my age and weight

If I fell in love w/track, I'd probably get a dedicated track bike

that said, my typical ride is in the NC/TN mountains, so it's Tail of the Dragon time all the time. : D

Now there is a nearly new Ohlins TTX from EBR that I can get for a discount......damn tempting

When helping WillieBuell with his sprung tensioner it was pretty obvious that the belt has a HUGE effect on suspension travel.

I'd always considered my first 1125 to be too hard on the rear regardless of settings.
We had both of us -fob- hanging off the subframe and could only get an inch or so of suspension travel.Remove the idler wheel and all of a sudden the rear end was free to move like any other sport bike.

The sprung tensioner made a lot of difference to handling/power delivery. Not sure how far he got with production.

My 'need for speed' has always started (and usually ended) with getting good suspension - and over the years I've probably spent a Kings ransom on top end Showa and Ohlins kit.
However, the best rear shocks I've come across are the Dutch AST ones (They build for F1, Touring cars etc and are well well known on European circuits.) I've got them bolted onto my Tuber Buells and they're the best thing I've EVER put on a bike.
Ronnie Kreeft (he races Buells) will build one to your requirements and can be contacted through UKBEG.

I'm partial to Ohlins TTX, or a 3-way Penske. Superb quality, fully rebuildable, and fully supported here in the US.

Like Crowley says ...AST are very good quality and I've had one on the X1 for a few years now ..............but I am also now the proud owner of an AST for my CR "won" on ebay this week brand new for the bargain price of £271 :-) :-) :-)

An AST for that cheap? Sweet! I had their kit on an M3 and loved it.

For what it's worth here is a pic of the 1190R shock that I took at this last weekends AMA race at NJMP. #99's bike.

At Atlanta, I noticed Geoff was not running an Ohlins. I asked him about it and he said its a shock from a new company JRI and is owned by the son of Roger Penske.

You could have a pretty lengthy gentleman's disagreement over Penske vs. Ohlins and probably never get to a good conclusion.

However, if you have a local tuner you trust and can work with, use what they recommend, because that's what they will know best.

While on the subject of rear shocks, I have a question. Should the rear shock make sounds like air is escaping, when compressing and rebounding? I think I may have a blown shock.

Not usually. What shock and how long since it's been serviced?

Hagon - the US distributor is here in SanDiego- pricing is very competitive

...heard good things about their twin shocks for Vintage bikes - haven't tried them yet...

It's the OEM shock on my 1125r. 20k miles on it and I'm sure it's never been serviced.

Oh, yea, it could be low on nitrogen, or have a blown/old seal, or who knows. It's due.

Worth getting serviced or replaced with a better damper, IMHO. Good suspension is something special on a motorcycle...

If you are cheap ( : ) ) and want more of the same, make an offer on one of my OEM units. I have three of them. Two are essentially new and have been sitting in a box since '09, one needs to be serviced but has RaceTech gold values and is sprung/valved for a novice rider doing mostly street riding.

Well missed on the Ohlins, bidding went up beyond what I wanted to pay for used Ebay unit

So, still looking!

Wow, I've heard good things about Hagon, but hello 1998 website.

Lol. Looking at the JRI website, they are partnered with the company I work for!

I'll have to see what I can get for a price, or trade some product!

Just picked up a showa rear for $300, hopefully I'll notice a difference from stock.
