Question

Would you trade your excellent condition low mileage 1125R for the new ZL1?

The reason I ask is because my wife is on me about getting rid of it to pay a few bills associated with buying a new home. Add on the fact that she doesn't like me riding all that much and the pressure is really on. I told her I would get rid of it if in return I could have a ZL1.

She mentioned I could have the SS early next year if I sold it. I told her that my bike is not seen on ever street corner like the SS so I consider it that special and would only part with it for ZL1. To my surprise she has agreed but it could take a year for me to actually get my hands on that car with our current financial situation. What would you guys do?

If you want the car bad enough to give up the bike go for it, by then the EBR may be out
and If your waiting you may opt for that vs the car.

good luck on the house, you will enjoy that.

Thanks Oldog and Dennis I appreciate the insight. It's gotten to where the wife and I have agreed to limit where I can ride the bike due to the dangers associated. I don't have to sell it but I have a lot of strings attached to holding onto the bike. I guess she figures she can at least drive the car.

Better odds of dying as a pedestrian. Funny thing, a few years ago I was hospitalized due to a motorcycle accident, the same day one of my friends was walking on a sidewalk and was hit by a car full of tired drunk kids that were hung over. He died, I didn't.

I don't understand why you would let your wife have that kind of control over you, but it is none of my business. My girlfriend would rather I didn't have 7 motorcycles, but would do never do anything to come between me and the bikes.

That said, regarding the original question, I would keep the 1125R. The ZL1 is nice, but the simple fact is in the end it is a car and therefore inferior.

My wife thought my MC days were over back in 1965 when I had to sell my 2yr old Triumph to get a new car. After 6 Months with no MC I took out $200 from our bank account to buy a used dirt bike she almost left me then. The next dirt bike she bought me for my birthday. Had MC ever sense. From 1997 all Buells she is getting tired of me wanting to go on the MC all the time. Here we go again.

It's kind of my only tool to get away from it all, so I don't want to sell it. I would like to think I am responsible when riding. I always wear boots, gloves fully padded jacket pants and helmet. There is a chance I could keep it but we'll see. She does seem to have a lot of control here the more i talk about it. My mom told me do not compromise and sell the bike or it will only be the beginning point of me giving up things.

I work for a Chevrolet dealership. The ZL1 is an amazing car, but I don't think I could do it. Bikes are more fun.

If you want a ZL1 look me up. =D

2 wheels > 4 wheels

I'd pick an 1125R over almost any car if giving up the 1125R meant not having any kind of bike ever again.

If someone offered me a Ford GT to give up riding, I might think about it. Okay, hell no, I wouldn't.

Also, if you are REALLY considering ditching the bike to get a car, get a GT500, not a ZL1. (but that's a 100-page thread for another forum. LOL)

Fleshrocket - depends on what you want it for.

According to everything I read. GT 500 for Drag and ZL1 for the Track

Trade the wife in on the ZL1, and keep the 1125r. My wife kept me off motorcycles for 16 years, finally I got rid of the wife, now I have two Buell, and want an EBR to add to the collection. I am much happier these days!! lol

Listen to your mother.

No seriously, if you must sell an 1125R to "help pay for" other things to ease the home purchase, there is a problem because you won't get much for your bike right now. If it were a Corvette worth $30k then you're talking. Even half that it helps. But $3k-$5k? Not worth the effort.

Keep the bike. Save up your $$ to pay for those other things your wife is pressuring you for. And don't let the wife dictate where you can ride. You can listen to her wishes, consider her opinions, but it sounds too much like she just wants you to give up the bike. Unless you are okay with that, then do it. If it will make you unhappy then don't. Being able to compromise (both sides) is important in a happy marriage.

Having said that, I fully understand your wife's concern. She loves you and doesn't want to lose you in a motorcycle accident. Weigh your options, decide wisely, but whatever you decide don't ever look back.

You clearly can't afford a ZL1 and they are over weight and over priced anyway. Not to mention ugly and have terrible blind spots.

You'd really pay that much for a camaro? I'd sooner buy a corvette.

What Mr. Froggy said times ten. You're still a young man. Next forty-fifty years is a long time to have regrets about selling your soul/Buell while filled with self-loathing and being pissed off at your wife.

Please remember this is coming from a place of Buell Brother love.

Well guys, after some thought I put my size 13 down and told the wife I would not be selling the bike and we'd have to find another way. Being with my wife can sometimes be akin to living with Dave Ramsey, only he has a much softer voice and longer hair.

Nothing is ever a "good" purchase it seems like, but I'm learning to deal with it. The wife and I were blessed with great incomes and can do pretty much as we please within reason.

Her philosophy is "cash and carry" and she does not believe in going into debt to purchase something. As a single man, doing what I damned well pleased and eating out of a greasy bag for dinner, I can admit being a bit careless and more of a survivor. However, I had two Buells before meeting my wife and they are both gone now. The 1125 was a negotiation between us as I could not live without at least one bike. It is paid for and costs me nothing to sit in the garage until it rusts if I so choose.

Thanks for helping me realize that fellas. Now let me log off this damn computer before she sees all this.

Buy an SS and save yourself some cash. I have a 2010 2SS/RS and an 09 1125CR and I always have something fun for whatever mood I'm in. I wouldn't be happy without a bike.

Smit3833,

My same line of thinking. The Corvette gives up about 150 hp to the ZL1 and it is a collector's car for sure. The weight makes their performance nearly identical on the track but there is no denying the potency of 580 hp. The extreme heat here in Texas keeps me from riding the bike like I want to, which makes the car a very appealing alternative. The SS is very nice but the exhaust is tame and they are not as "special" due to the number of them on the streets. Also, the ZL1 is track ready right from the dealership.

I will keep the bike on a tender for when the time is right I suppose!

Snackbar, I had a Corvette at one point, then later I got a modded Mustang GT. For a while I thought if I had a really fast car I could eventually be 100% happy and transfer over my need for speed to a safer, more comfortable alternative. I won’t lie to you. Both cars were bad-ass to the bone and VERY FAST. I could for the most part get my speed-kicks from either one. I took both of them up in the canyons and mountains of SoCal, on long road trips with the wife, ran errands on them, took them to work, etc. However, there was ALWAYS one thing I could not escape: a car is too big to overcome bad, annoying drivers who believe they were put on this Earth to hold you back, slow you down, and even more important is the fact that I can split lanes here in Southern California. Even 1,000 bhp simply cannot overcome all those things that bug me. As a result, I often got frustrated driving a fast car (especially one that is very fast) when there is someone in front of me going slow and will not let me go by. Traffic just kills me! I can’t stand sitting in stop and go traffic when I know I can just slip by the sea of cars up to the front of the line on my motorcycle. There is extreme satisfaction in being able to slice and dice congested roads on a fast and maneuverable motorcycle, and pass slow convoys of cars in the twisties with extreme prejudice and ease. The only thing that comes as close is flying over them in an airplane!

So just remember that the grass is always greener on the other side. I’m sure the ZL1 is kick ass through and through. I’m also sure you will love owning it and driving it especially when it’s that hot and you’re sitting inside that climate controlled cockpit. But to be perfectly honest, for me anyway, I’m just as happy driving a not-so-fast sporty sedan when I’m not on my bike. I can still accelerate quickly, pass people, etc. on my sedan—although I can’t slay all comers like I could w/Corvette/Mustang GT. In fact, I rarely could use the awesome power of either of these monsters, not on the street anyway. OTOH, I can easily go to my favorite back roads, hit triple digits, strafe the canyons and mountains, then pass with impunity, while riding my 1125R, then laugh at traffic on the freeway on my way home. In fact due to the ease at which my 1125R and I slip in and out of traffic and pass everything with 4-wheels with ease, I can ride farther and faster than I ever could on my Corvette/Mustang. A trip to the countryside on a bike takes me half the time it would in a car (even a fast car).

I sold my Corvette and got a sensible, less expensive, affordable (but still quick) sports sedan. I also sold my Mustang GT. 100% happy with my 1125R. When it’s too hot to ride, I drive the car and wait for nicer days to ride.

Rogue,

What great perspective! I am from Los Angeles but now live in Prosper, TX where it's been on average 106 degrees for the past two or three weeks. It seems there's no escaping it.

When i go home to visit, I am flabbergasted by all the lane splitting there. I'm too afraid to try it and its a very legal maneuver. I drive a big pick up which keeps me feeling safe as can be. I can barely speed in it because of the 92 mph governor enforced by GM.

So for me the car would provide that perfect balance. The 1125 is staying with me however until that extra need for speed and canyon carving arises. And i agree with you. I go places and do things on that bike that my truck could only dream of.

What rogue_biker said ++.

I've got a Mustang Cobra, a hot-rodded Caprice wagon and my wife has a 300C SRT8. All of them deliver grins behind the wheel, but none of them let me slice and dice through traffic like a bike. All of that horsepower turns me sour when I am stuck behind left-lane hogs and similar members of the Anti-Destination League. And I've gotten just a wee bit too "mature" for shoulder passes.

On my last vacation, we rented a Toyota Camry SE w/Sport Package. We drove up Hwy 1 north of San Francisco during the weekday. There was nobody on the road. Oh my! It was fun! I never had to pass ANYBODY! The car also handled very well on those very tight roads. Under those conditions, with nobody else around, even an underpowered car was fun as long as it handled. The wife was warm and comfy, so was I, and we got to bring almost everything. LOL! All the while I was thinking to myself: I don't think I could top that on a bike as everything was perfect! The year before though, I hit the same roads on my motorcycle on a Saturday and the whole world was out! Holy Crap! We spent half the time passing everything on 4 wheels. I knew I would have been miserable as hell in a car!
