Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway. It's right up your alley.

This is a scenic byway in the crater lake area that follows the course of two rivers, the Rogue and the North Umpqua. The trip is a fantastic series of waterfalls, gorges, and serene stretches of clear mountain rivers. You may see lots of whitewater rafters too.

The trip runs counterclockwise, tracing the Rogue river heading north, skipping around crater lake NP to avoid the crowds, and heading northeast toward Diamond Lake. Then the trip follows the North Umpqua river as you head west back to catch the 5 again in Roseburg.

to make the loop get off of the 5 at Medford and take 62 through Prospect to Union Creek. Instead of heading east on 62 to go to Crater Lake, continue northeast on 230 and take that up to Northeast to Diamond Lake. (this path follows the Rogue river). Then pick up 138 and take it west back to the 5, following the North Umpqua. You can then go south on the 5 to close the loop.

the entire loop (not including the stretch on the 5) is about 120 miles and takes about a half day to complete. Fantastic scenery. I found out about this trip in one of the BMW Motorrad/National Geographic publications that list the top 20 scenic rides in the USA. This one was ranked #1. Definitely worth doing if you're in the area.

I have only been to oregon once, and I'll second time's crater lake route. I did go to crater lake, and it's worth the crowds. Beautiful up there.

There's a little cut off road just North of Cave Junction that goes to a little burg called Happy Camp, which is on Hwy 96. It is quite twisty, and in my experience, very little traffic...
Also, you could just continue South on 199 from Cave Junction down the Smith River Canyon to Crescent City...(Great Road!!)

Then follow 101 to Klamath Ca. turn left at Hwy 96 and blast up the Klamath River Canyon to I-5
I live just off Hiway 199, so I know these roads well!

The Smith has super clean water, (drinkable!) There's a combination of long sweepers to corners so tight you could reach out and touch the rock wall, a tunnel, some great S-turns, and Redwood Ntl Park just North of Crescent (BIG trees!)
SFguy, if you roll through on a wknd, might be able to catch up...

By the way...The road from Crater Lake to Diamond Lake to Roseburg then to Coos Bay and Hiway 101 is an awesome ride, then you hang a left, the Oregon coast is extremely scenic...

Neil (Fuzzz), I think here in Utah and when I hit Idaho we have some really nice canyon roads to carve but what you are describing up there is absolutely beautiful also. Nice pictures bud. If I were closer I'd be all over those roads and enjoying every minute of it and taking many pictures if I could stop long enough. HA!

Sfguy, enjoy your ride, it sounds great. Bob

Hey sfguy, I live here in eureka, just north of fortuna. I'm heading out to happy camp and back today. I love the 299 and 96. The 36 between i5 and 101 is the curviest road I've ever been on. Be careful because there are many decreasing radius curves. There is one gas station that has premium gas. It is near the cutoff to hayfork. The owner is also a sportbike enthusiast. Enjoy your ride!

Thanks for the greta ideas. I will see which we can add into our trip. There are 13 of use going, 10 on bikes 3 taking the car and hauling gear. Phlegm we will be coming though on week days, sorry to say. Well not for the riding part, just would be nice to meet a fellow Bueller.
Was planning on going from Oregon Caves to 96 to Ferndale and staying in Fortuna. Hitting 36 the next day, then Ave of the Gaints, before staying the night in Ft. Bragg. Then it's back to SF.
