I got my tool back and took measurements. The shaft diameter was measuring somewhere between 1/4 and 5/16, and somewhere between 7 and 8 mm, so I took it to a millwright to get an accurate measurement and another opinion on duplication.

The K-M tool is fabricated out of a single piece of large diameter stock that's the size of the handle. To make it, they cut the hex head into one end, then turn down the shank enough to make the M12 threads, then they turn down the shaft again, this time enough to make it 7.54mm diameter. Then they harden it when they are done.

Duplication would involve quite a bit of work for someone to do by hand. The economy of scale comes from the setup that automates the process. For $60, you can't beat buying it at EBR.

If you want to source parts for DIY, good luck finding hardened shafts in 7.54mm. They aren't common. I couldn't find them at McMaster-Carr. Maybe someone else would know another source for the hardened shafts. Perhaps you might be able to get by starting off with a 19/64 drill bit.

edit: 5/16.

Between 1/4 and 9/16? That's a pretty huge range :P. Did you mean 5/16?

Timebandit. You rock. Thanks.
I saw in another thread that someone said that the tread was 12 mm x 1.5 pitch.
I think standard for a 12 mm is 1.75 pitch. At least that's what all of the 12 mm bolts I have on hand are. Is your tool 1.5 pitch as far as you know?

Just to close the loop, it is 1.5 pitch for anyone else reading this.
I don't like leaving my own questions unanswered for other's who may have the same later.

I made one and posted the pic. in the swap thread. It's ugly, but worked just fine.
