I bought a used '09 1125r and can't track down the PIN. The dealer can't help without the old PIN or installing a new instrument cluster.

I have tried 0000 and the last 4 of the VIN to no avail.
I have read archives and understand that the system will lock itself after 20 incorrect tries but I wanted confirmation that it will allow me back in after 30 minutes. I wanted to be sure that 20 wrong guesses will not lock up the system indefinitely.
If you have tried this, please let me know.

Also, has anyone purchased the EBR race programming software mentioned in previous posts and successfully reset the PIN?

Uh-oh -- we're transitioning into the realm of "How To Steal a Bike."

I went through this on a BMW board. I got banned for having a similar problem with an anti-theft computer on my E36 that wouldn't recognize my key, and as a result, it kept the anti-theft system activated and wouldn't turn it off. The result was that the car would crank but never start.

When we started talking about how to troubleshoot the problem, some paranoid guy reported me to the administration for allegedly teaching people how to steal cars! All I was trying to do was to figure out why my car wouldn't turn off the anti-theft features that were turning off spark supply to the ignition system. Didn't matter -- I got banned anyway and the thread got erased.

I ended up spending $1000 at the dealership to fix the problem. It turned out that the problem was that my numbskull painter didn't disconnect the battery before servicing the door lock assembly, to paint a door, and he shorted out my body control computer.

I hadn't considered that my post would look sketchy.
But I'm running out of ideas and it seems dumb to buy a new instrument cluster just because of an unaccessible PIN.
The service guys at the dealer didn't have any other advice.

I've never set mine. But when I did I entered the default 0000 and it said incorrect pin so I don't worry about it but that doesn't help u sorry

I've been through this problem more than once -- Once with the door lock/body computer problem that I mentioned above, and another time when my radio got code-locked accidentally.

The whole idea behind setting a PIN is to make it impossible for someone on the street to get the bike running on their own when the possibility exists that the bike has been stolen. By making it difficult/near impossible to do this on your own, they force you to go to dealers for help. Having dealers run VIN numbers on bikes that have anti-theft lockouts is probably a good thing; it might end up recovering some stolen bikes.

When my E36 radio got code-locked accidentally, I took it to an independent import mechanic. The shop called BMW to ask them for support in unlocking the radio. They refused to help, and forced me to go to a BMW dealership. At the BMW store I had to jump through some serious hoops to get authorization from BMWNA for the local dealer to unlock the radio. I had to take in the original copy of my title and my drivers license and fax them to BMWNA. Then BMW cross-checked the serial number on the radio to the VIN number on the car, and once they established that I was the legitimate owner of the car/radio, they authorized the radio to be unlocked. BMW takes anti-theft seriously, and IMO that's a good thing. The result is that thieves don't bother to steal BMW radios.

As a Buell owner, I wouldn't want there to be an easy way to bypass the anti-theft system. If that knowledge gets out, think about how many bikes might end up disappearing and getting parted out.

At $300, maybe a new cluster isn't all that expensive. If I were in your shoes, I'd be all over the guy who sold me the bike with a locked-out console.

I bought my '08 1125R used in early '09. The previous owner did not know the code. I have never used it. It made me nervous at first that I might get locked out of my own bike somehow, but it has never been an issue. I never mess with it.

If the battery goes dead, or if you change a battery, will it lock up the security?

If not, I won't be that worried about it.
If so, you're right Timebandit, $300 to have it done with isn't bad.

I don't think it will be a problem. IIRC, you won't be able to get it locked in the first place without the pin. To change it to auto-lock you need to enter the pin, and if it's set up to ask you if you want to lock it on shutdown, you need to enter the pin every time you lock it.

Absolutely make sure that both connectors at the ECM are in place and locked. Under the left pod.

Also, make sure that your CAN bus line is connected and locked.

Sounds to me like the PO was messing around in this area.

Like I mentioned earlier, I was worried at first. I have since changed the battery and the ECM with no security code issues. I have disconnected the battery many times with no issues. I don't even know how the security feature works. I can't use it without knowing the PIN. It has never come on or asked if I want to enable it. I just ignore that feature. It's worked for me for a few years now.

One thing that I've always wondered about the IC -- what's that little key icon supposed to indicate? Mine is always on, can't ever seem to turn it off, not even after an IC replacement.

I did set the code once when I first got the bike, but I haven't used it since. I wonder if that key icon indicates that the code has been set at least one time.
