I need the info for procedure , but thanks anyway. The inch and a half range on the glass is not quite accurate enough for me without the correct procedure. For those who don't know - there is NOT a dipstick on '10 models. I don't know for sure, but I would think that being held upright would be the way to go. When I check my '09 it's on both front and back stands so it's vertical and level front-to-back. And FWIW, I do it cold and keep it at the full mark, maybe a bit over even. This results in a little bit of a forward cant, which I envision might lower the dipstick readings a bit. I would be interested in knowing how the levels change using only the rear stand vs. using the front and rear stands. are you using the pitbull newfront stand up front? do you notice any change in levels if you only use the rear stand?   Steeleagle Posted on Monday, May 21, 2012 - 03:13 pm:        From the 2010 Manual: "Oil Level Cold Check Perform engine oil level Cold Check as follows: An accurate engine oil check can only be made with the engine at normal operating temperature . 1. With motorcycle on the side stand look at the oil level in the sight gauge. An indicated oil level between the lower and upper lines on the oil level sight gauge is acceptable for safe engine operation. 2. If there is no oil present in the sight gauge lift the motorcycle to a straight up and down position to see if any oil appears in the sight gauge. 3. If oil appears proceed to the Hot Check. 4. If no oil appears place motorcycle on sidestand and add oil in 3.4 fl oz (0.1 L) increments just until you see oil in the gauge and then proceed to the Hot Check. See Figure 44. Oil Level Hot Check Perform engine oil level HOT CHECK as follows: 1. To bring the motorcycle to normal operating temperature, ride the motorcycle for a least 10 minutes and 5 miles (8 kilometers). 2. Park the motorcycle on the sidestand while idling and remove the oil fill plug. 3. Idle the engine one (1) minute. Shut off the engine. 4. Read the oil level in the sight gauge. a. Below the lower line: Add oil in 3.4 fl oz (0.1 L) increments until the level is between the upper and low-er lines. Refer to Table 20. b. Between the upper and lower lines: It is safe to operate the motorcycle. c. At (or above) the upper line: Drain oil at 6.8 fl oz (0.2 L) increments until the oil level is between the lines. 5. Install the oil fill plug." Maybe the reason to open the fill plug is to relive some pressure to let the oil flow more smooth and quick to the sight gauge... I remove the filler cap after shutoff. Do NOT remove the filler cap with the engine running, as stated in #2 in the manual.
