Not to be a smart-ass... I don't know where you live, but where I am, there is a professionally-run independent shop that sells tires for only a 5 or so bucks more than mail order, and I want them to still be there when I need them next year...
Plus, they mount and balance for next to nothing, and if I ever have a warranty or other issue, I've got a place to go back to.
All the professionalism, service and expertise we expect out of our industry will never happen if we cheat them out of their very existence.
Just my 2 cents....

"Not to be a smart-ass" IF you go buy your own tire changer/balencer will pay off its self in years to come and save tons of money just in tires alone! Hey after your friends see that you do your own, you can change a few for them (small fee = Beer)

2x a year + 50$+/- extra for putting rear and front tires on (off the bike) + 40+/- in tire mark up. Do the math. I Love getting screwed by my local dealers who think they have to make 10mill +/- a year on screwing customers (thats a small shop who does sales and tire changes)}

You are fortunate to live somewhere with a shop like that. I haven't found a place in Houston that has prices on the tires I want(or selection) anywhere near as low as mail order and I refuse to subsidize their decision for a brick and mortar model.

YMMV,

Like JG said, it's a great idea to patronize a local shop whenever you can. I used to have a local independent shop that I could count on for tires but they've gone the way of the Dodo. Now I'm stuck with dealerships or DIY. Around here the dealerships are called stealerships because they price gouge on tire service.

As far as DIY goes, the big internet stores are so competitive on tires that their prices always seem to be within a buck or two of each other, and comparison shopping isn't worth the effort. I use MC Superstore as a price reference for comparison shopping. They have free shipping without any extra fees for tires, but they ship in plastic bags. I prefer merchants that ship tires in boxes to prevent scuffing the sidewalls in transit. If you like Dunlop Qs then STG has a pretty good deal on sets. STG ships in boxes, which sets them apart IMO.

I buy all my tires from Jake Wilson. They have killer service. I checked at all four of my local shops. Only one had sport tires of any sort. They wanted nearly $400.00 for a two year old Corsa III rear and around $350.00 for a front.

Jake wilson is good.
Sportbiketrackgear.com has been excellent for tires for me. Always been the cheapest of all sites I've visited.

STG (Sportbike Track Gear) has the best tire deals, great customer service, good people too. I have done track days with Brian Van with STT at Barber and he always takes time to talk with customers even when he is out for a fun day on the track.

Personally I pull the wheel and take it to Hamad Tire in Akron, Ohio for mounting & balancing. I have purchased two rears and one front for mine. I have used JC Motors, Cycle Gear, & Bike Bandit. I paid $105 for the Corsa 3 front, $150 for the Corsa 3 rear, and $200 for the Corsa Rosso rear over the last two years.
