"My system functions as designed. Which leaves alot to be desired. This was not only confirmed by my dealer, which was a pretty good dealer. It was also confirmed by the Buell (not HD) techs that flew here from WI to double check."

Interesting claim that you've got buell techs flying in from Wisconsin to check out your bike. That puts everything into perspective.

I fixed my 1125 charging system concerns permanently.

Most sportbikes aren't designed to charge a maximally depleted battery at idle.

I didn't realize you were the expert on most sportbikes. Funny that out of the 25 or so streetbikes I've owned (including 2 other Buells ) this is the only one that can't maintain a charge at idle.

Timebandit - I have the thermocouples, data logger etc. ready to send you for the temperature testing on the stator winding. PM me so I can ship them to you, I've sent you a couple responses to your inquiry on my progress, but get no response in return, let me know if you still want the equipment.

TimeBandit, while I don't have a Buell, the charging system on this bike doesn't appear to be fundamentally much different than most of the Shunt PM 3 phase generators that have been produced or are on the market today. Certainly lead acid battery performance has not changed that much when attached to a Buell.

My comments were primarily for the benefit of those reading the thread to clairify how to assess "how much of a difference 0.2V is". The prior assessments seemed misinformed at best.

Posplayr ~ Thank You. Some new folks may not know this, Posplayr is an EE and has published several extensive papers on the subject of stators, regulators, their inherent design differences.

Pos, what are your thoughts on Li Iron batteries like Shorai? They claim to have significantly less resistance then lead acid batteries. Would less resistance present any advantage in regard to the time or power needed to charge the battery?

Curve_carver,
I had a Shorai for a while in my GS1100ED with the Compufire Series R/R. As I recall it would idle at a voltage slightly higher than the lead acid battery. But I think that has more to do with the resting voltage of the LiIon battery. It is very light, but unfortunately I let it run down with an attached voltmeter which killed the battery.

If anything it would likely discharge faster at idle because it needs a little more voltage (if your voltage in marginal close to 12.8V), but otherwise I would not expect anything dramatically different. The only time the internal resistance should be a factor is if you have close to a dead short across the battery. Not something you really want in the first place.

I think weight is the biggest factor, but I really did not get much use out of mine at all. I also modified my battery box to cut down to the smaller form factor of the Shorai. In retrospect it was a mistake as if I was on a trip and needed a new battery I could not fit the standard size into the battery box anymore.

That is about all I can say about it.

Jim

Daneybuell,
Thanks I just stop in once an a while to see how these stator problems are being sorted out.

I flog my bike pretty hard, the problem is I need to get to an from my flogging grounds, which requires riding through town, at or near speed limits, so it is rather impossible for me to just ride it like I am on the track all the time. Also, if I am on the flogging grounds and end up behind a giant tractor hauling a wagon full of cow shite or a little old lady on her way to the sewing circle I have little choice but to ride slowly.
