I have been searching for nearly an hour now. I thought I remembered reading about a revision number for the instrument clusters that had parasitic drain problems. If you had a revision number after xxxx it should not be a problem. Another Buell owner has an early '08 that is on its 5th battery. I was hoping to find the information so he could check the sticker on the back of the IC. Am I remembering wrong? | ||

If you put the bike in diagnostic mode it can show you the version of the cluster software. | ||

Early morning brain fart - IC firmware cannot be changed in the field, has to be done at the manufacturer. There are new revisions that take care of one of the LFL/CEL failure modes. IIRC, the 6.1 rev was for the drain, not sure. Just looked thru my EDM and found no reference to it. I think I got my manual before the problem was identified. Seems to me the IC/battery drain was reference in the same tech tip that the low fuel light issue was referenced. Don't quote me though as my memory is pretty pi$$ poor lately. Oh... if its an early 08 cluster I think you actually have to take the cluster off and look at the back of the tag for the firmware version as it won't be displayed in diag unless it's a 09/10 cluster. | ||

I think the drain was tech tip 396. I don't think that tech tip included the low fuel light issue. | ||

Always using the kill switch - leaving it on "off" when the bike's not in use seems to help with the battery drain issue ... | ||

Thanks everyone! I found the info with your help. It is tech tip 396 or TT396. Revision 5.1.1 took care of the parasitic drain. Early versions of IC's will not tell you on the display what version they are. You have to look on the back for a sticker. I have forwarded the info to the 1125R owner. | ||

This thread reminded me to call the Harley customer service--my '08 occasionally will kill the battery overnight, and has had the LFL stay on well after fuel has been topped off. I haven't taken the bike to the dealer because the dealer is an hour and a half away, and the issue is very intermittent--so much so that I doubt they'd be able to reproduce it. My warranty expires on 12/22 (so in a couple weeks). Harley customer service gave me a reference number to document the issue but couldn't confirm that Harley would cover the cluster under warranty if it was after the expiration. I asked if Harley would authorize replacing the cluster if the dealer couldn't reproduce the problem, and the CSR said she couldn't make a guarantee either way. Fair enough. Time to call the dealer and see what their service advisor has to say. | ||

With the TT 396, you should be able to get the cluster replaced if it has the correct numbers on the back indicating a faulty unit. Of course, if you're out of warranty, try sweet talking them! My bike had the same problem, in '08, and the new cluster took care of it, (knock on wood) I'm still on my original battery! | ||

The service advisor said he didn't think there would be a problem getting it replaced but recommended getting the bike to them before the warranty is up just to avoid any potential complications. So if my tow vehicle isn't ready by next week some time, I'll be taking a chilly hour-long ride! |
