My 2009R shows a check engine lamp on this morning. I drove 10 miles with it on and had no apparent problems (maybe a more evident on-off effect, but that could be just a biased impression). The HD service is 40 miles away. Any idea what could be the issue?

PS: Called the HD service and they said to bring the bike there...

Nothing else on the display?
When anything major is faulty the dash on mine has always told me exactly what is wrong- had front coil unplug and was displayed on dash straight away,"front ign disconnect" -or something along those lines- saved me loads of grief trying to find the problem.
Same with IAT sensor.
If nothing displayed then only plugging in with diagnostics equip is going to find a fault code.

Go into Diagnostic Mode by pressing Mode and Toggle together while turning key to ON or PARK.
In PARK, the headlights don't come on so you don't drain the battery as fast.
In RUN, the lights come on too but you can then start the engine and check running values.
You will stay in Diag Mode until you shut-down or the VSS senses movement.

Yesterday I went to pick up the bike from the HD service. Done under warranty, zero cost. Apparently they replaced a sensor (Y0640.1AMA) and did the harness update (94753Y). On the way back home the check engine lamp turned on again ... the bike runs fine except an evident on-off at 3500-4000 rpm with the throttle closed... After a while the lamp turned off again... they will reopen on dec 27th. I'll keep you posted.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Parts book says that's the crank position sensor.
The CEL will come on while the fault is live, when the CEL turns off, the DTC goes into Historics until 50 clean restarts.
You retrieve historics in Diag Mode.

Merry Christmas
