It was mentioned that we have some folks who can fabricate things on this site. I was wondering if any of them might have had some hand in building a hard luggage rack for an 1125R. If so, could it be possible to build another one and how much would you ask for it? I'm trying to get one for my 1125R and being it's about time for the white crap to fall figure now is a good time to install.

I'm in the process of fabricating a rack that will attach late model Honda VFR saddlebags to my 1125CR.
Here is a shot of the bags as I try to find a suitable location. I will be using the rear footpeg mounts as I do not carry passengers on this bike.
The bags and stock mounting rack, from an '05 VFR800, I got on FleaBay for about $450. I could have modified the stock rack, but decided to fabricate one from scratch, and sell the stocker back on fleaBay. I'll probably have about $550 into them when I'm done.

I'm pretty sure someone else has done this, I think with Givi bags. You may find pics doing a search, or they may see this thread and post up.

It certainly can be done...

Here is the link for the Givi bags:

My bags should lay about 3" lower than those.

Bart, did you do the same setup for yours? If so, how did you go about it, is there a writeup for the materials and how to on it?

Yes, I had a hand in making a hard luggage setup for my 1125r, and by 'had a hand' I mean I 'helped' while a gifted fabricator friend really made it happen. He's moved on to a new area now so there's no chance of reproducing this as we did it.

I read and digested everything I could find on this forum first. Based on the ccryder threads, I went for Givi bags mounted using modified Givi hardware. My bags are lower and further forward than his, because they delete the passenger footpegs.

Of course in the op it doesn't really say 'Givi side bags' it just says 'luggage rack', and if what you really want is some kind of hard luggage for the coming winter, I believe that the guys who have screwed a top trunk to a spare passenger seat pad have the edge in value effectiveness. They're getting about a zillion times more luggage bang for the buck than I really get out of my overkill setup.

Pattio, nope, what you have there for hard side bags is what I'm looking for. I'm really interested in what Bart and the person in the link he posted did.

There is nothing better than having good hardbags solidly mounted to the bike. I don't know if I can ever go back to soft luggage again.

Anyway, I mounted VFR hardbags to my 1125R back in '09. There's a post somewhere on Badweb about it...

...ahh yes, here it is: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/556303.html?1271548548

I was able to use the bags for commuting and one 1300 mile weekend trip to the Smokies before I totaled the Buell. For the duration I used the set-up, it worked well.

Cat, I am still in the process of fabricating my custom brackets. I would like to mount mine similar to Pattio's setup as I plan on removing the rear footpegs and would like the weight of the bags forward and lower.
I will post up pics as they get closer to completion.
I chose the VFR bags over the GIVI V35's because I can fit a large full face helmet in the VFR bags.

Bart and others, if it will help you guys out with the development, I'll buy a set of racks. I am currently running a Ventura rack with soft bag, it is great but I would love to have a hard bag option : )

Any and all info on how some have done this would be great. Also, what materials were needed and where did you find them.

My version for Givi topbox.

1. Universal Givi rack F1000 - got mine off ebay in Springwood Suzuki, Queensland.
2. You'll need 2 new peg bolts [according to my bolt guy - imperial] shortened to size ~ 20mm and 2x6x50mm Unbrako allen key screws, with 4 washer as space each for rear hanger.
-These fit the nutserts in the rear frame holding the tail assembly.
3. You need to get either the MM or M35 base plate depending on the style of Topbox. Again ebay.
- Monokey or Monolock. Make sure you get the aluminum base plate, there are plastic ones, they're crap. Got the base plate from UK, cos I could not find one locally.
- The Monokey is more expensive and the box is double wall and rated for higher speed.
4. New alum angle 40x40x6mm thick about 150mm long, to make the 2 pillion hangers.
5. Alum 25x25mmx300mm sqaure bar; this is to the rear hanger. This is where it becomes tricky depending on your tail assembly. Mines the Evolution.
6. You'll need files, hacksaw, bevel square, drill press, masking tape luv and patience, 16mm drill and 8mm drill and tap set.
7. I took off 55mm of each legs of the rails, to make the base plate sit close as possible to the cowl; allowing the cowl to come off - otherwise it sits tall.
-This part should be the done last once the rear hanger is set. There are 2 ferule holes that need the 16mm hole re-drilled. This is what the base plate is attached too.
- My rails run line of the under tray to carry that line through - this is for looks.
9. The rails are about 285mm apart, tapering towards the back. The alum square stock has had the corner taken of at 45 degrees and 3mm wide.
- The rear frame holes are 85mm apart and I drill 10mm in from the edge of the square bar.
10. This is now where you need to transfer the angles to the face of the bar where the rails brackets attached.
- The ends are cut to angle, drilled perpendicular to the angle and then tapped with an 8mm tap.
11. This whole process is painfull to ensure all the correct angles cut, filed, polish, drilled and tapped. I measure 3 times and cut once.
12. Then polish with flat file and oil. Oil prevents the alum sticking in the file and oil polish with wet and dry.

I'll try and find a photo

I pulled the bike out into the sun to get a couple more pics of how the rear mount point is done.

There's a slug lying transverse in the subframe. (I'm not sure what to call it. A strut? A member?) There's a sort of cradle of aluminum sheet there, the 090 number is stamped on it in the picture, and the slug/strut/member fits in the bottom of it. You can see the shiny ends of the ssm protruding on either side of the aluminum 090 area. There are two holes through the aluminum part there already, which the undertray uses to attach, so longer fasteners are used there from below to secure the ssm.

The rack assembly bolts to the outer faces of the ssm through holes cut in the plastic undertray.

The turn signal got relocated a little to clear way for the rack. The holes in the undertray are the only cuts to the bike and I have a new one in the box ($27) so the bike can be returned to stock if desired.

Hope you might find this helpful. The support-through-the-subframe slug strut member idea is something that could be executed a lot of different ways, depending on the tools and materials available.

Where would I find some of those items. I'm in Germany currently and seem to be unsure of where to go. I could also order online.

Pattio, can you get a picture with just the brackets and not bags on the bike from left going to the right all the way around. Just want to see how it all connects. Thanks again for what you've done thus far.

Also, with where your bags sit. Do you have any problems with them when leaned over?

Another question for those with the VFR bags. What things did you all need to do to get those racks mounted up? Any pics of your setups?
