Hi, Everyone-

Just bought my first Buell, an '08 1125R and it is a hoot and a half.

I have one question, though. My fuel mileage so far has been hovering around 18-19mpg. I'm not trying to save fuel, just wondering if this is a sign of some kind of fueling issue.

The bike has 3,800 miles on it and is in perfect shape. Anyone else noticed this kind of low fuel mileage before?

Thanks!

Yes that is unusually low fuel economy, they can easily get 40mpg without trying.

Is your bike 100% stock? How is it running otherwise

40 MPG is as unusual as 18-19, honestly. That number comes from someone riding around at barely cracked throttle on tires aired up until the traction is compromised.

I probably get 18-20 on the track, and something more around 30 in the canyons, so I do think 18 is low. So, it does depend on what you are doing with the bike.

If you are commuting, yea, 18 is too low. If you are having a whole ton of fun, it's not too far from normal, and certainly not unusual for a quicker-paced track rider.

Hi, thanks for the quick responses! Really glad to be a part of the community.

I'm getting 19mpg Average from the instrument cluster. I understand it's not the most accurate measure, but I doubt it's off by a factor of two. I'm definitely not getting 100 miles per tank of fuel, and the exhaust smells very rich at idle.

It is totally stock otherwise, or at least I was told it was. I haven't torn it down to see, but the exhaust/etc is stock.

reset the average while cruising on the freeway thats what i do or look at instant mpg while cruising on the freeway. this will at least give a gauge of how the bike is running.

my 08 pushed hard is averaging 32 to 33 average mpg. cruising at 80 i am getting 37 to 40 it depends. I have a hmf with hmf ecm from ebr. i am willing to bet that average has not been reset in awhile.

there are two readouts concerning MPG on the Inst Cluster...if you got a manual with the bike- make sure you are reading the "avg." not "instantaneous" ( hint if you're going down a hill with the throttle closed it will read like 100 mpg...if you chosen "instantaneous" MPG...and if you're at WOT..it reads like 10 mpg ) you need the AVG MPG and it sez it on the Inst clustr
two things you may want to try - but you have to do a search in the site ( or read the manual)
a) Do a TPS reset...it tells the computer how "open" the throttle plates are..and the computer controls the fuel ( via injectors)
b) there is a way to "clear" a fouled plug(s) ( with out removing the plugs)...you have to look it up - both are easy to do and are worth learning.
keep an eye on voltage - turn the bike OFF with the KILL switch as well as the ign lock/switch - '08 have a voltage draw when not running - by turning "OFF" the kill switch it helps the battery survive.
welcome to the madness - learn to use the search function....it works well

I have a CR (which has slightly different gearing) but....
Out on the highway not going totally insane you should get at least 35mpg average.
In town its probably down around 29 or so.

30 is average for sure. I would do a TPS reset and if that doesn't help I would see about finding someone to check your flash.

I usually average low 30s with a mix of commuting and railing on it. Upper 30s while cruising at high speed on the interstate. Tps reset seems like a good idea.

When I installed my race ECM my MPG improved considerably, from 100 miles per tank to 120-130 road use

A great example of why a rider's perception of how hard they ride isn't a reliable indicator.

1. Frequent wheelies
2. ample usage of rev limiter
3. enjoy smoking traffic off every light

I have zero concern over mileage, my bike is for fun and I ride it accordingly. Now, we do have enough traffic around here I do have to tone it back a lot, but still, when I can, I'm on it hard.

My mileage is good probably due to the mix of longer range cruising, and keeping it in a high gear/low revs}

34mpg average on mine with ebr ecu and a fmf pipe. I don't commute much, just ride for fun so it's usually a faster paced ride.

The IC on my race bike says 23mpg average.
I've always thought that was interesting.

I don't really care to much on the MPG, I just ride, but normal ridding around town I just look for a gas station when the trip odo reads 150 miles. Highway ridding, not hauling ass i start looking for the gas station around 180-190 miles. have gone as far as 230 on a tank of gas doing 65mph the whole tank. Put in a tad over 6 gallons. Bike completely stock no mods.

Where did you put the extra 3/4th of a gallon?

I have averaged low 30s since day one. Half back roads and half hiway, I'm not a racer but I don't cut it any slack.

Unless you are a racer I would definetly think something is wrong.

Yeah that seems low. As Jdugger pointed out, you have to really hammer to get the mileage to drop significantly. The lowest I've seen is 16 and that was at significant periods of triple digit speeds/full throttle near redline riding. Otherwise 30's.

36 average with Erik Buell Racing ECM Barker pipe lost about 2 mpg with that. I would not want to go back to stock 38 mpg.

I average about 37MPG with normal commuter/pleasure riding with stock setup. Couldn't imagine getting 19 regularly without also getting a free meal and lodging courtesy of Mr Po Po. Did manage 52MPG once out of necessity...

Froggy,

hahahaha it was one of those times when the good looking girl walked by and I lost my train of thought. So it was literally topped off, VERY full and spilled some on the bike. The pump said six. Hahaha not my best moment with the bike.

Mine is an '09 R w/exhaust. I usually fill up at about the 140 miles mark (every other day) and put in 4 - 4.1 gal usually each time. So that gives me around 34-35 miles per gallon. I'm pretty much going 80+ to and from work with a short stint in the 110+ range each day I go to work.
