Well, I've ummed-and-arred about this for a while and finally decided to give up motorcycles for the foreseeable future. I went out on my 1125r to get a haircut on 4th Sept and on the way back, on a road I know about a mile away from my house, I somehow had a head-on with a car! Luckily (I don't know how?) I was thrown clear after initial impact, so I escaped with no life threatening injuries. However, it left me with: Fractured thumb on left hand (pinned) Broken uln and radius on right arm (plated) Two broken ribs Fractured right shoulder Various cuts and bruises from the road/mild concussion from being knocked out This sounds pretty serious, but sat here typing this almost 8 weeks after the accident, I have pretty much made a full recovery and start back at work next week! Just a bit stiff and achey, which is to be expected. Unfortunately, the Buell was a complete write-off and so was the car I hit. Fortunately I was not a write-off and no-one else was injured. Shook me up though -I just can't see myself getting back on a bike. Maybe in time...? A huge thank you to everyone who's given me advice/support/made me laugh on this site. I really found it invaluable and a great place to be. Sorry to hear about your accident, your very lucky to escape with minor injuries. What kind of gear were you wearing or helmet. Dont loose faith completely in bikes, they are my only sanity to this world besides my wife and close friends. Just remember you can get hurt doing anything these days, even an accident in a cage wont always fully protect you. Good luck to you though. | ||

Hello Fullthrottle2008 Reading you, I remember two years ago how I feel after accident. It's always Hard to live, but with time, we finally laugh and return on bike, never on the same way, but on bike. be brave and take care of you. | ||

You don't have to give up bikes. Get a Ninja 250 and come to the track. | ||

Sorry to hear about your accident, but its good to know that you came out relatively unscathed. I know how hard it can be to get back on the bike after an accident, I had a similar accident last year. Get well and ride again when you are ready. | ||

For info I was wearing: Shoei xr900 helmet (due for replacement, 9yrs old) Richa slider leather trousers Sidi vertigo boots Spada "turin" textile jacket Spada leather gloves I got a couple of burns on my knees from the leathers, but no real damage. The jacket rode up because it didn't connect to my pants (yeah -meant to correct that), so I got a pretty deep gravel rash injury on my left above my hip. Luckily I replaced the back armour with a knox approved type and there was armour in the elbows and shoulders. The jacket just shredded, but maybe took some energy out of the slide. Thankfully the shoe was full-faced -I would've ground my nose off on the road otherwise. Another rider who had an accident in the same city within a couple of days wasn't so lucky -months of plastic surgery for him! :-/ My kit definitely limited the damage, but it's probably because my buell ejected me clear that I survived. I think I feel like I do because it was probably rider error and seeing the effect on my wife and kids. If I was a single man I may very well have got back on, but at the moment my decision is not to ride. | ||

Good luck to you, and enjoy all the other areas of your life fully! I had a very bad racing accident 15 years ago. As my wife said, because of me, some little kids got to see a helicopter land and take off... I probably only kept riding because I didn't remember any of it. | ||

FT, In a small way I feel your pain - mentally anyway. I had a less serious get off myself and it it shook me up for a few months after that. I do respect your decision though as an intact/functional family is a pretty fragile thing to begin with. Don't feel like you have to leave Bad Web just because you don't have a bike - you can get your fix by living vicariously through the rest of us :-) | ||

It's not the same as a motorcycle, no major speed rush and leaning around curves, but I bought a 1997 bit-of-a-beater Miata for my too-boring-for-a-bike commute and find the open air, winding it out to redline and pushing the curves gives some grins itself. And I don't have to wear a helmet. Not a car guy too much, but this is fun. | ||

Granted if you don't ride you can't die in a motorcycle crash but you will still die eventually.I have gotten older and try to listen to the reasonable voices in my head more but I believe if I don't do the things like ride I will not be the man my wife and kids know and love.I also know if I try to be someone that doesn't do things like ride I can only do it for so long and then I am sneaking around being me until I can't stand it anymore.FWIW and I wish you the best. | ||

Glad to hear you are still above ground. I hope you find something else that you enjoy for a hobby. I personally choose to pursue all sorts of "dangerous" hobbies because one never knows when it will end. 5 years ago my finance died doing nothing more than sitting on the couch. We had just decided on the when's and where's 12 hours earlier. I wish you the best. | ||

I quite riding around and through town. Way too many close calls. It's purely recreational for me now. | ||

I can't imagine how hard I would have to be hit in the head to think quitting motorcycles was the "right" idea. I guess "Fullthrottle2008" (who should now change his name to "NoThrottle2011"), found out. Glad you're healing. Sorry you're leaving our little community of wacky funsters. | ||

I think FT is making the right choice for himself. The LAST thing any of us need to do is force ourselves to do something we're not 100% comfortable with on a motorcycle. Good on him for being honest with himself! (But I still suspect we'll see him back someday...  ) | ||
