Why did they not put the kick stand ignition kill on this bike? It seems like a simple feature, yet not having it on any motorcycle sees so dangerous. Also why does the manual say some 1125 models are equipped with it?

It's on Euro models.

It was left of US models because owners of previous Buell bikes didn't like them.

If you forget & leave it down, don't worry, it will retract at the 1st opportunity you present to it.

Certainly NOT the experiences I have had. Mine stays down and scrapes. Then I am left going "$hit, what broke now?" while all of my buddies are beeping and flashing high beams.

Yes, sometimes we are all human and forget.

Is it a matter of ecm reprogramming to add that feature, or is it more complicated?

You need to physically add the switch in addition to enabling it in the ECM.


I really don't see why you would want it. It is just one more failure prone safety that will disable the bike when you least expect it.

+1 Froggy.

The tuber Buells - and many other bikes/brands - had pretty consistent intermittent issues that would cut out the engine because the ECM thought the stand had just gone down. Just one more failure point.

It's just in the routine:

Key on
Wait for IP test cycle to end
Wait for engine light to go out
Verify green N light
Start bike
Stand bike up
Sweep left foot back to retract stand
Put in first gear
Ride.
Grin.
Repeat.

Takes about eight seconds, IF you wait for the IP test and engine lights to go out. Bike won't leave without you when you hit the button, and you won't have a stand dragging the ground.

"Failure prone". Only a Bueller would look at it like that. Of course the Tubers had issues with it...they have all sorts of electrical issues!

I have owned and been involved with (known close friends with) 100+ bikes from 1981 to current model years. I have NEVER seen or even heard of a kick stand safety switch failure...but I have heard/experienced a few "dragging/sparking moments".

I have a'97 M2 and have yet to have the sidestand cutout go south. My nephew who has a'99 X-1 had his go out within 10K. We just looped the wires and never put another back on.

I've had it happen to every bike I've ever owned with a kickstand switch. 03 Blast, 04 Suzuki GS500, 90? Yamaha XT350.

Good news is that it is always quick and easy to bypass once you figure out what it is.

I automatically put up stand when I get on the bike, but I'm pretty heavy so I'm paranoid about bending the stand, I don't ever use it to support my weight too

... the Blast has a kickstand switch? Huh. I wonder if mine has been bypassed... or maybe I've never noticed it.

I just take my first left or two gently, and if I hear a kickstand dragging, kick it up. It's usually a case of "I swept it up, but didn't get it past the overcenter and it bounced back down."

I've gotten into the habit of putting the kickstand up, then as soon as I start rolling, checking the kickstand again & sweeping to verify it's up.

I'm sure you could install one, but it really is just another failure point...

Don't think a lot of parts on the 1125r's will bend to much. Something about the material/composition of the majority of the components just scream, breakable or grind-able... not bendy.

I guess you could apply heat to it and bend it, but I just don't see the kick stand bending cause your a big guy. I bet someone here (engineer) knows what those kick stands were designed to support and what conditions might cause them to fail. (break, snap or... perhaps bend.)

I could be wrong though.

I have the sidestand switch on mine but it's disabled as I have the E-B-R ECM... I don't miss it a jot.
