I had warranty work done to repair the clutch weep for the third time. I noted on the invoice they billed for "part# 890.9107 brake/parts cleaner". The service manual says "Use denatured alcohol to clean clutch system components. Do not use mineral-based solvents... which will deteriorate rubber parts even after assembly. Wash all components in clean DOT4 brake fluid or denatured alcohol." When I got the bike home I found the clutch was weeping worse than when I took it in!! I believe the failed attempts to correct the weep could be caused by the use of the wrong cleaner on the clutch parts. Does this make sense to you who know this kind of stuff?? Thanks | ||

makes me wonder about all the repeat failures that we've experienced. I've never looked at the bill because it was warranty work when i had it done. i did however take note of the instructions in the book for washing the parts though. | ||

Based on my own experience using "brake parts cleaner" in the automotive repair industry, it is an excellent substitute for denatured alcohol. In fact, many brake cleaning products use denatured alcohol as an ingredient. If your HD dealer can't get it right, you should just bite the bullet and use Erik Buell Racing clutch components, do it yourself and see how that works. | ||

Turns out this is not an issue. The clutch system is just a brake Hydraulic system that moves something other than brake calipers. Brake cleaner is the proper product for servicing the system. I am so frustrated by not getting this problem fixed I was anxious to find an off beat answer. I should have thought this one through a little better before posting up the question. | ||

Zane_t - If your HD dealer can't get it right, you should just bite the bullet and use Erik Buell Racing clutch components, do it yourself and see how that works. Too true - one has already been ordered and should be here today if it got through customs quickly. I'm no master wrencher, but I have no fear of making mistakes! | ||

Brake cleaner comes in 2 forms,flammable+non flammable,I use the non-flammable.It does damage plastics+paint [be careful+wear nitrile gloves}.Contains Tetracloroethylene, not for sale in CA.or NJ. | ||

Brake cleaner is very potent stuff, ours at nissan is in a giant 55 gal barrel. We use it to clean everything, I try not to use it because of how harmful it is, but it cleans up crap real easy. | ||

xdot when you pull it apart look at how the lip seals where installed i bet they put one on the wrong way causing a bigger leak |
