Guys I have long story with getting my bike repaired but to not bore anyone. Can anyone tell me why the rear brake rotor bolts can't be reused? Also are the bolts for front the same as rear or are they different? My bike had been waiting for three months for rear rotor bolts and dealer had no clue when they will get some or why they can't reuse the old ones. | ||

You can reuse them. Brush the threads clean and install with loctite red. | ||

... you're not supposed to reuse them? Huh. I just red locktite'd mine when I took the rotor off to clean it. So far, no problems. They're not torque to yield bolts or anything, as far as I could tell... | ||

That's pretty much what I thought. The only place I've seen torque to yield bolts is deep inside engines - mostly head bolts, but I think they're used in other places at times. Just tell your dealership to clean them and use red Loctite... | ||

I'd be surprised if your dealer would be willing to re-use them with threadlocker if the manuals don't say that is allowed. That would be a tremendous liability to take on just so you can have your bike back. Better yet, maybe you could buy the bolts from American Sport Bike and supply them? Even that includes liability on their part. ac | ||

I tried to get them to reuse them and they will not no matter how much hell I raise. I offer to put back together myself but they won't let me since its in their shop. Its been one lie from them after another for the past three months. Hopefully I will get the bolts quickly from amercian sport bike so I can get my bike out of harley jail. | ||

liability is the key word. when things get litigious the responsbility is spread around by design. Seems like the factory doesn't trust the dealers mechanics to use locktite. Maybe this takes the mechanic out of the risk assessment? Someone elses parts would fail for the same reason, it expands the dealers risk. | ||

Hell, they're just Grade 8 bolts. I went to ACE and matched mine up with some Grade 8 bolts there and went with it. | ||

I've reused mine front and rear with Blue Loctite. Since, I've done three track days without thinking twice. But now that I'm thinking about it, I'm gonna go check them torque specs...........just in case | ||

I dont know why you are having trouble getting these, they are active and available from HD. Maybe your dealer ordered the old part number and not the superseded one. CA0005.9A7 is the current number CA0005.T is the old number (Message edited by xnoahx on October 05, 2011) |
