My stator failed this week, bike has about 6500 miles on it. I was able to get the bike home and to the dealer the next day I think it helped that I always kept the bike on a tender. The dealer is aware of the stator problem mentioning that they have already replaced a number of them. They also realize that they are replacing the stator with the same defective stator. I asked them if they could replace my stator, under warranty, with a 2008 stator instead of the 2009. They know it will fit and the 2008 stator is not superseded by the 2009 in there parts manual. They are going to ask HD, but my question is am I crazy for even asking them to do this

There have been several people that have had that done already, so you wouldn't be the first to ask. It is the best solution.

The "new" 09 stators have an 08 output spec. 35-45VAC at 4000 rpm. Not sure what the change was, but there was a bulletin about it and everything.

Still waiting to hear if I can run the new lower-output stator withOUT the "update" harness, and let all three legs run as designed...

Rat, There is no "new" stator, there is a bulletin covering a mistake in the service manual.
All hd/Buell charging systems should put out around 10 VAC per 1000RPM.
Rat if you send me over your email i think i'm smart enough to e mail the bulletin but i'm too stupid to be able to post it.
And by the way on my 3rd failure i asked politely about downgrading to the 08 specs and got what i wanted on their dime.

Funny thing is, the "new" spec matches the 08 numbers. Doesn't it? I only have an 09 book...

It's not the volts, It's the amps that will kill ya!

Dealer called today, they said HD approved the replacement of my 09 stator with a 08 I hope this is the permanent fix

It would be cool to see that bulletin posted in the Service Bulletin/Recall section of the BWB for the rest of us.

Hmmm - that only says that the manuals had incorrect info printed in them, not that the stator had been modified.

Nothing in that bulletin suggest any changes to the specification of the stator, merely that the value you'd expect to find when doing an electrical check should be 35-45VAC not whatever was previously printed (~50-55VAC IIRC).

I don't have the manual in front of me but dependant upon what RPM range you're doing the check at that isn't going to help the situation.

It's possible that the "new" 09 stator specification has been changed, but that bulletin doesn't actually suggest that.

Drbyk - I'm assumingt hat the dealer will aslo change the rotor (they have to if the 08 stator is going to work) in which case that's a great result for you.

What dealer was that? I suspect others would be keen to know so they can get theirs across there too...

ref '09 Buell 1125 Elec Diag Mnl, Starting/Charging pg 3-19, AC Output Check:
... at 3000 rpm. The AC output should be 35-45 VAC (was 45-55).

The dealer is Racine HD, they are Buell friendly and have been nice to deal with. They said they typically replace both the stator and rotor

When I took my bike in last week, I asked for the 08 or my old 09 back and was shot down on both.
Called today just to see how it was going, seems we are waiting on parts, but should be good to go next week.
Kicked the idea about a 08 stator again and the service guy said not this go around, maybe next time.
The way he said it,maybe after they run out of the 09s they would go back to the 08s?

Mine suggested something simular, insinuating that the stator put in was different somehow, and that HD had a wait and see attitude happening, before going back to the 08 style stator.
