I ran a thread on noise before, no clear answers, really don't think it's the rotor nut, sounds top-end-ish, bike runs great, just want to hear if others of you think theres a lot of clattery noise and it's just how the Rotax is. Sounds like an old Triumph ready for a valve adjustment. Thanks.

Sounds like there are rocks in the motor, just the way Rotax are.

Have fun with the bike!

what year?
They get quieter with years.
I had an 09, when i got a 2010 motor i noticed it was much quieter.
When i got an FMF exhaust, I noticed that the engine quieted down even more, even though the exhaust is louder.

Check your oil….mine starts rattling around like that when its time to change/top off the oil.

Orman1649 - +1, engine noise is a good indicator. I watch the oil pressure light on start up, when it seems slower to go away at startup I think I'm a bit low.

It's an 09, and the idea of adding a bit of oil has been something I'm going to try. I've got a little over 7000 miles on it, it'll be interesting to give a good look through when I do the valves. I'm going to do another oil change and screen look-at soon. Last time I checked the screen at @ 5000 miles it was perfectly clean. Sounding like an old Triumph I can handle, if it starts to clatter like an old Guzzi I'll worry!

Mine has gotten louder at start up because the oil needs changing. The stock exhaust is pretty loud for a DOT approved can too and that contributes to the clatter.

I read in some article that the finger-followers produce a lot of the valve clatter.

Every one I ever heard sounds like a box of rocks...noiser than my XB, but not as noisy as my DRZ400...it's all those straight cut gears in there...of course there is the possible loose rotor nut thing.

My buddy's 1125 sounds scary noisy...and has since new...he runs the unholy crap out of it and it keeps coming back for more...

solid valve adjustment almost always clatters. ever heard a solid lifter setup compared to hydraulic on the same engine? even new 2011 fords with solid buckets clatter a little. straight cut gears, clutches. all can contribute to clatter. its a sportier engine so i consider most of that noise normal. mine sounds like a box of rocks until fully warmed up when all the metal expands and closes the gaps.

turbowolf is right if you hear any of the newer direct injected engines they sound like shit at a cold idle Even Cadillacs 3.6 vvt V6 sounds terrible when fired up on a cold winter morning!

they clatter at idle.

i can hear valve tic while riding as my oil level gets low. it doesn't take much - couple/few ounces does it.

I have no trouble accepting that race engines are built loose to stay loose after thermal expansion.

This morning I started her up and listened real carefully.

From what I can tell simply by standing next to the bike as it idled from cold, the noise seem to be:

Exhaust
Gear whine
Some valve noise but not the ticking kind, more like whirring sound. The loudest are the first two above.

It's actually nothing like my XB12R, which sounded like a can of marbles at idle. IN any case it sounds a lot like a Ducati V-twin with stock exhaust.

Gear clatter? Mine sounds like metal slapping metal whenever I let the rpms slip below 3000 in any gear except 1st and 2nd. I've given up trying to understand all the sounds this bike makes and just now I just chalk it all up to "character"....

Just throwing this out as a possible source of the sounds you hear. The timing chain has a plastic guide/housing that to me has to rub some. I've asked that question about a completely different racing engine for a car, but got no answer, even though I hear there are no dumb questions.

I rarely start my bike without having my full helmet on so it doesn't seem like much to me. The few times I do start it without my helmet on I agree it sounds "clankity". I've often thought it sounds like a Briggs and Stratton below 3200 RPMs.

Think ours is loud? Check out a Duc's dry clutch rattle. Sounds like a tin can full of bolts. ; )

The only time I hear valve clatter on mine is if I put my head close to the engine. From standing next to it (without any hearing protection/helmet), most of the noise is exhaust and gear whine.

No clattering, no chattering, nothing like Ducati's dry clutch chatter! Ducati owners say that's music. My wife said, "What's wrong with that bike?" LOL!

I've been meaning to post again, I added about 200cc of oil and that made a noticeable reduction in the clatter. When I do oil/filter I put in the full three quarts, and before I added this extra 200cc I put the bike on front and rear stands so it's pretty level, checked the oil cold and it was just at the very tip of the dipstick, the added oil put it a bit into the "marked" area. I'm not at all concerned that an extra 200cc or so is "overfilling" worth mentioning.

I use about 15% of this in my oil, and I also run my oil between the full and overfill line.

This winter I will do a tear down and put 2010 tensioners in it but for now this does wonders.

i'm getting this clatter as well. it's gotten louder since i've done an oil change. i used Honda HP4 20/50 synth blend - not the HD oil the manual recommends. it does quiet up after it gets warm so i'm guessing it's not a prob, prolly just the loose tolerances that allow for expansion like mentioned before. i'll try adding a little and see what that does. this bike's new to me so i'm not sure what to expect. i thought my valves were going off! thanks for the heads up. cheers!

i had a engine noise with my 09 cr, about 1500 miles, it went to 2 dealers before the problem was discovered, 1st dealer says "they all sound like marbles" second, same thing..i insisted bike didnt sound like that untill the last ride...after a few more to the dealer, and the dealer calling HD they removed the square plate on the bottom of engine (oil strainer screen) found it to be full of cam chain guide debris, i got a 2010 engine..i have since sold bike..bottom line insisit that the dealer checks the screen, its a easy procedure

Came off the track at Fontana and my 09 R sounded like a Duc w/ dry clutch. Loaded it up and took it to dealer, Rotor Nut had loosened. Tighten it up, put it back together, rolling it off the lift.........the stator dies. Thankfully it's still under warranty, and my mech is a friend who looks the other way with my race parts.

I stopped by the HD dealer on my '09 cr the other morning to buy parts. They were having a free hot dogs and soda event to drum up foot traffic. There was a throng outside the parts entrance.

As I often do, I killed the engine about a hundred feet from the parking spot where I eventually coasted to a stop. The radiator fans were roaring as I removed my helmet. Two of the fellas munching on hot dogs looked at my cr, then at me and then asked: "Is that an electric bike?"

So my 1125 still sounds like Triumph/Guzzi valve clatter but I drained the oil and dropped the screen and all is clean so I guess I'll just keep beating on it.
