So i'm on a road trip from Vegas to Visalia Ca for a training course. Everything has been fine the whole trip and then pow, the belt breaks.

Luckily for me it wasn't too far from my hotel, but i still had to push the damn thing 2 miles or so. what a work out.

Here is the REALLY lucky part. a month ago i knew about this trip so i bought a tire repair kit, a American Sport Bike seat and a SPARE BELT. i was almost going to leave it back in vegas, but thought ehh, i have the room i'll bring the new belt along.

Now a few questions.
WHAT TOOLS do i need (sizes to be exact) in order to change the belt. I have a manual and more than capable of changing it, i just need to know EXACTLY what size allen keys do i need, torx bits, wrenchs etc. So i ask kindly of the community to help me out...

I give my thanks guys.

oh and if anyone happens to be in the Tulare, fresno, Visalia area, hit me on here..once i get the bike running agin i want to do some riding : )

It will be a bit of a pain to do with a brand new belt as it isn't broken in, but you just have to remove the swingarm brace (Allen key, not sure what size off hand), then you can wiggle the belt around the guards, and try and slip it on (Won't be easy if its a new belt).

If you can, loosen either the axle or tensioner to give you a little more slack.

I had to loosen both. The axle is tapered and that makes a lot more difference than I thought it would. The tensioner does not need to come all the way off... I used one bolt as a pivot to scissor it back into place, but found the new belt was so springy that I could not get the bolt for the tensioner started until I loosed the axle...then getting the tensioner back on was easy. And tightening the axle is a lot easier than try to push the tensioner up and feed in a bolt straight all at the same time.

Pinch bolt is 8mm I believe then you'll need 22mm socket and ratchet or in a pinch wrench.

Don't undo the tensioner if your not at home, the tool kit has all required except the Allen key which pinches the axle.

Remove the belt guards, it makes it easier, and rotate the wheel to allow the new belt to be guided on.

Keep us updated, and don't undo the tensioner, it will create more problems than it solves !!!

Just to clarify, slacken tensioner if required, but do not fully remove any of the bolts or you'll end up just starting all over again.

the tool kit does not have the allen keys for the pinch bolt or the left side foot peg which needs to be lossen enough for the belt to slip through. this is also the same size (what ever it is ) for the spacer in the swing arm that has to be removed in order for the belt to go into the swing arm..

thanks for the help, i just need some sizes as i'll probably be borrowing some tools to get the job done.

belt gaurd and hugger t30
peg support and swing arm filler 6 mm allen
pinch bolt 10 mm allen
axle 7/8 allen or tool and 7/8 socket or wrench.
with a rear stand i worked my xb belt on just pulling the nessary parts to get the belt on.
you have to be carfull if you don't loosen the axle but it is doable

RT thank you. i bought those items and everything worked almost....

the idler pulley is a pain or atleast mine was.....i removed the whole foot peg. it came off easily, the belt was a SLIGHT PITA, but acceptable... now for me the idler pulley/bracket was TIGHT i didn;t have the wrench or Torx bit for it so i just twisted the 2 halves of the brackets to get the belt to slip through and then moved them back. that new belt was a PITA even with a loosened rear axle.

I had a friend hold the bike and brake while i worked the bracket for the idler back on. I couldnt imagine trying this without loosening the rear axle. i would venture to say it would be impossible.

Anyways i'm back on the road, thanks everyone. between ya'll (for info), my buddes (for a ride), and Harbor freight i couldn;t have done it..

Avalaugh, you need to verify your statement on which tools are included in the bike... Mine had none fo the allen keys i needed.

i only had the Torx and 7/8" axle tool.
