I recieved a jardine rt5 exhaust with me 1125 when I bought it. I'm curious if I go ahead and mount it will I have any trouble?or should I wait for some sort of ECM upgrade as well before I install the pipe?

I have the same exhaust, and after I had my bike serviced (and took out my ECM so the dealership wouldn't see it), I rode 500kms with the stock ECM in it. It ran alright, not great, but not bad either. Once the ECM was put back in it made a world of difference.

I'm no rocket scientist but I suspect it will run pretty lean, and with the EPA standard specs most machines are already on the lean side.

What would running it lean do to the bike?

Ruin the motor.

Mild detonation eventually. Physical damage to the pistons? You'll probably start throwing codes on the stock ecm long before physical damage occurs. One will be an A/F sys error, which is the AFV spread being too wide for the ecm to compensate for.

Spend the $275 for the race ecm, it's worth buying.

you guys are scarin him. i've run pipes on lots of bikes without changing mapping. yeah it may run a little worse but it sure sounds cool! and i've never hurt an engine doing it. i say throw the thing on and ride it. later on in a couple months get the ecm. you'll be fine

Run it, but get the new ECM sometime soon. It will make a difference.

I bought a Keda RT-2 and ran it for a month before installing a slightly modified (I hope - I have no idea what they altered since they said nothing) Free Flow ECM from Erik Buell Racing. Yes it runs better now than it did initially (and will run even better when I send it in to get re-flashed with the new RT specific settings - congrats, Dean!!!) but it ran just fine with the stock map - seriously for normal street riding you won't notice THAT much difference, IMHO.

Now if you're racing...

I have a '09 1125R. Within 500 miles of new I put on a FMF Apex slip-on with the stock ECM. It seemed to run fine to me and I observed no error codes on the dash diagnostics.

It took about 4-5 months and about 4,000 miles, but when the weather finally changed from winter in central FL to spring, I finally started getting the A/F Sys Error that D_Adams references above. I brought it to the dealer because I couldn't understand why it "suddenly" started having this error. After looking around on this forum, I learned that the 1125 Helicon motor is pretty sensitive to exhaust changes and a re-tuned ECM is truly a necessity with an exhaust upgrade. I have no damage to my engine, and I returned it to complete stock (solenoid and all) and it runs perfectly again with no error codes.

After Al of Americansportbike.com did a full test of exhuasts, and a recent posting from an owner, I'll eventually go with the Erik Buell Racing race ECM and the Barker's exhaust with the 1.5" quiet core insert. Should gain about 15+ HP over stock and also reduce the engine braking significantly.
