I try to be short as my searches have shown this topic to be a popular one - I’m looking for post Buell closure discussion/suggestion.

I took my 1125R in 1.5 months ago for an instrument cluster replacement (my third to date). The dealer told me then that the standard parts wait time is about a week, as is the case with all my work since little is stocked. I’ve called to follow up nearly weekly. I discovered with my last call that HD has over 300 IC on back order. The service tech called & asked about speeding up the process but got nowhere; at least he tried. When I pressed the issue the tech told me that Buell has been closed & parts will be scarce. I said it was my understanding that parts were to be supplied for some time, hinting at 7-10 years. He told me that they would stock them for 3 years after the shutdown. Mind you this dealership sells Buell’s – I bought mine there mere months before the fire sale . Given that he has already called cust svc what recourse do I have? 300 BO IC is quite a line to be in & the glitches in my IC make me reluctant to ride it until one comes my way – the last IC made the lights cut out at night! As a result I’ve left it at the shop so I can use the extended warranty’s rental reimbursement but I am getting close to exhausting my limit as my Buell is my primary means of transportation. I find it frustrating to have my bike laid up for so long when I’m paying the loan, interest, insurance, registration and extended warranty while paying for additional gas, registration & time for a temp beater car. You'd think they'd stock IC after I've burned thru so many, perhaps I can ask... Now this brings up all the other troll issues like if my excessively faulty IC goes out after parts stop rolling how am I suppose to fix it? It’d be a shame to have a bricked bike over an IC problem.

Ok, maybe that wasn’t as short as I had liked… it’s hard to rant objectively…

One of the ways that Harley screwed the pooch was with part contracts with various suppliers, they no longer need 4000 ICs a year. Given the smaller demand, and the fact that the bike is no longer in production, there will be lead times as the cluster is made in batches. From what I've seen on here, the IC has been getting around 6-10 weeks before being shipped, so you may have it soon.

Have you had the cluster replaced multiple times? If so, I would try and figure out what the real issue is. Losing one? Sure, shit happens, but multiple failures is unlikely.

Chris B:

Can you tell us what codes you were seeing before you took it in the first time? Second time? And for this IC changeout?

The reason I'm curious is my 08 1125r is going in next Thursday for:
Comm error U0001
IAC system P0506
V speed system P0503
LT fan system P0693

Sorry to hear you are having this wait. Froggy is correct. Purchase Orders are issued with XX parts releases against each purchase order. Each release requires raw stock purchase, production run, test, shipping. You get the idea.

My wait for second IC was 145days give or take 2-3...sucks man. There's really nothing you can do but wait. Aside from that ask very nicely to get the bike back while you wait. Adamecs here in jax was always good about that provided it wasn't a lhs issue.

Once they diagnose the codes, the bike will be heading back to my garage for storage until parts come in.

Yes Frank, this is my 3rd IC. I brought this up to my local HD and they seem to think that remove and replace is the solution rather than suspecting an underlying problem as the IC's are known to be "faulty." Its like they are just trying to run the clock out having to supply parts/service - I wouldn't be surprised if after warranties are up they turn bueller's away at the door.

Steve, my IC has never thrown a code. Every time it all starts with the low fuel light not working. After that its just a matter of time before they have to replace the pump and/or IC.

Is there nothing in our purchase, warranty, contract or otherwise that stipulates turn around times or has it always been that the guy who buy a thousand dollar chrome job gets serviced first?

Chris:

Thanks for the feedback. My biggest issue right now is the left fan isn't working. I'd be riding it if that wasn't an issue.

Regarding the service wait, I've had my '00 X1 Lightning totally ignored at the dealer. Was there for oil change, both holes. Went to pick it up and come to find out they never touched it in the 8+ hours it was there.

It will be real interesting to see how long my wait will be with the 1125r in service. The collision center OK'ed me to take it home after the estimate until the parts arrived. I assume service will do the same. We'll see. My warranty expires in February 2012, so I've got 6 months to get this bike sorted out.

I hope you get your bike back soon. I read this somewhere..."you'll never see a motorcycle in front of a psychiatrist's office". Chin up!
