This is my first summer with my '08 1125R so I was hoping to get some information regarding her hot weather behavior. I noticed that her cooling fan go on right away when the COOLANT temp gets to 170 F. It seems to run constantly, although I can’t tell if it runs all the time at speed since I can’t really hear it with the windblast. I do hear it come on around 170 F when idling/traffic and slow speeds. The fan does shut off within about 30 seconds after I shut the engine off. Is this normal behavior? | ||

Yes, the two fans turn on and off at specific temperatures depending on what ECM calibration you have. | ||

It's a stock ECM re-flashed at end of 2009. It just seems odd that the fan #1 kicks in at 170 even after I just started her up first thing in the morning. | ||

170° is 170° regardless of the time of day or how long your bike has been running. You can reprogram it to 200° or similar if you desire, but I can't see why you would want that. | ||

No I'm good with it if the behavior is normal. I have a VFR800 and her fans kick in at 223! Just wanted to make sure. Thanks. | ||

I recently bought a '99 VFR800. I haven't ridden it yet--it is about 350 miles away sitting at a brother's place, since he picked it up for me. I've read about them running hot--way hotter than I've seen anyone complain about for their 1125Rs. | ||

The VFR800's fan come on at 223 F. In traffic or in a standstill, once the fans run they cool the bike down fast. Due to the bike's fairing the heat is channeled away from the rider. My Corvette also runs its fan at 223 F. I read this engine temperature is best for minimum emissions out the tailpipe. I also read the best engine temp for max power on a liquid cooled engine is around 160-190 F. IN any case, I'm not complaining. I'm confirming normal operation. | ||

I have an 09R with the air flow reversed, it does run cooler but the left fan, once it has first come on, stays on until the engine is shut off. Regardless of engine temp. I've has the coolant temp reading as low as 72 degrees centigrade and still the left fan is on. What does one need in order to reprogram the ECM to do things a little more sensibly? | ||

Aj, you need an ECMspy cable and a copy of TunerPro, then its just a matter of editing the data on the ECM. | ||
