So Hacienda HD calls me every few months to try to get me to bring in my 1125 for the charging system "upgrade". I usually tell them I'm not interested in the upgrade and plan to leave my bike stock. Well they called me 2 weeks ago and I finally agreed to take it in, The writer said he would order the harness kit and call when it came in... A week later he calls to set up the apt to bring in my bike, I tell him I run the Erik Buell Racing Race ECU and ask if I should put the stock ECU back in... We discuss that the Erik Buell Racing ECH already has the feature for the upgrade programed into it and decide I DON'T need to put the stock one back in.

My game plan now is to let them put the harness in and then ride home and remove it so they have it documented as done and stop calling me.

I set up the apt for today (SATURDAY) at 9am and told them I will be waiting for the bike.

I drop it off this morning and make a few big bold notes on the repair order to NOT PROGRAM THE ECU and to save my solenoid terminating resistor that the new harness will replace.

My wife picks me up and we go off to eat and do some shopping with the baby... I get a call about an hour later confirming I don't want to program the ECU... and that they can't do WTY repairs on Sat because they can't get a hold of HD.. But because the writer didn't know that they would do it special for me. He also told me that it is very likely that doing the upgrade will likely cause my stator to fail so they wanted to give me a heads up on that (DUH)

I come back at 11:30 and browse at all the CRAP in the show room (I would like to ride the XR1200X thou) and at noon, 3 hours after I drop off the bike they tell me they can not do the upgrade w/o programing the ECU because it needs to be documented to HD.. I told them don't program the ECU and not to do the repair at all... I AM PISSED I WASTED THE FIRST HALF OF MY DAY NOW, The writer goes back and forth between me and the tech and eventually tells me if I want to bring it back they can do it another time with the stuck ECU... I tell them no thanks and that I'll just take my bike... They eventually push it out of the service dept with the communication plug and cap hanging loose on the left side of the motor and COVERED in hand prints. I point this out and they push it back in and clean it up, It comes out again and I gear up and hit the magic button.... DEAD battery from sitting with the key on... They push it back in and quick charge it and fire it up and back out it comes... This time the tech comes out and starts chatting me up (he has a Uly) He tells me that he wont get paid w/o updating the ECU so he cant do the work... I'm already past being pissed at this point and its almost funny how bad this has gone. So I tell him I didn't want the upgrade anyway and was just doing it to stop getting the calls and that I was going to remove it when I got home... He said that in his experience the harness just causes issues and that he would "document" the repair done so I would stop getting the calls...

WHAT THE •••••••

If you can do that why the hell didn't you just do the repair and NOT program the ECU like I asked and "document" the repair so we all could have been happy?

I am very disappointed in my experience and do not plan to buy or service anything with Hacienda again.

You should never have brought your bike in for a warranty repair that involved an ecu reflash with an aftermarket ecm installed.
You knew better than to even ask if you should install the original one.
Warranty work that involves ecu reprogramming typically requires a printout of the original flash and the updated flash installed on the ecu being programmed.
For you to ask a dealer to say they performed a repair and flash that they didn't do is fraudulent.
All the Tech wanted was to get paid for wasting half His day trying to make you happy..
You should have either
A: not brought your bike in for this repair
B: installed your original ecu, brought it in for repair, then removed it all.
The only mistake the service adviser made was thinking he could help you and not make to remove your aftermarket ecu.
You really should apologize to the poor tech who wasted half his Saturday and didn't get paid.
You as a BMW service tech should know better than anyone.
IMHO..... ALL YOUR FAULT...
Sorry dude No sympathy here.

techs are paid hourly?
Thats nuts that the guy wont get paid cause you didnt let them finish the work.
I, too, feel bad for the technician.

I don't see where it's extreme's fault. He made it clear to the dealer he didn't want the reflash right from the beginning. Why did they even take the bike in at that point? He should have been informed by the dealer they couldn't perform the service without a reflash before they allowed him to leave.

I feel bad for the tech but the service writer was at fault on this one.

Just my 2 cents.

If I could do it over I would have put the stock ECU in... However we discussed this before I ever brought the bike in.

The big problem for me was that the tech said he would document that it was done when I was about to ride away from the dealer... That didn't waste half his day, all he did was plug the scanner in and read out the ecu version and then do other shit. He never even pulled the seat off the bike.

I understand your frustration. None of this is your fault and I find it hard to fault the service writer either. I'm sure he didn't know in advance.

However, next time don't take your bike to the dealership unless you absolutely have to. If it ain't broke, don't let them touch it.

Xtreme had the @#% tune on his stock ECU, I have both eeebbbrr & @#% on my stock ECU.
When I did the harness upgrade they also updated the flash, no probs all I did is get my other tune updated via a remote hook up with the developer of that software problem solved.

So wait.

Let me understand this.

The OP had a warranty issue, that INVOLVED the ECM.

He took the bike in for warranty service...with a NON-OEM computer still installed in the bike.

And now he wants to get pissy because things didn't go right and he "wasted" half a day?

Swap the damned computer next time. That way you only "waste" ten minutes (five minutes, ECM in; five minutes ECM out).

BUT...

I discussed the ECU issue with them BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT.

I have been working for/with BMW for over 10 years, they take making the customer happy very serious and will do what ever is needed to make that happen. This is only me second time ever taking my bike into a HD service shop and I'm disappointed. I have heard all the stories from others and now I get to see first hand how bad they really are. I just wanted to share my experience.

I normally would never deal with them but my bike still has about 2 months of wty left and then I'll never set foot into a HD dealer again. Until then I have to go in to get my VSS replaced next week, they put a cluster in a couple weeks ago to fix the speedo cut out issue(surprise - that wasn't the problem)

I discussed the ECU issue with them BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT.

And my point is, if you thought it was enough of an issue to even bring it up...spend ten minutes and take it out of the equation.

Take some responsibility.

rat - dont you know where you are? We're in America, land of blaming someone else.

Xtreme - I understand your frustration, but you keep talking about wasting your day - maybe you have marital issues? Cause you said you spent that time (much of it) shopping and having lunch with your family.
Yes, it sucks they had your bike and really did nothing with it, but maybe they didnt know what all was involved in the service until they started digging into it?

Amy Winehouse, now she had issues. But that's all solved now. Shame though.

Move on. Stop complaining about something that you could have avoided and chose not to. Fortunately, for you, they didn't reflash your ECM. It could have turned out much worse.

Huh... Hals did my harness upgrade WITHOUT reflashing.

I told them I had a harness upgrade flash in my ECU already(I did), and who did the flash. They didn't complain that they "wouldn't get paid" if they didn't flash it.
