Hey gang, something's up with my 1125CR. I put a brand new H-D battery in it last week. It was on a trickle charger and fully charged - worked great the first night I fired her up and rode around for 10-15 miles.

This morning I fired her up, only the 2nd time since putting on the new battery. Didn't fire up right away, but then I noticed on my commute that she was bucking me back and forth at really low RPMs. I'd have to rev her to ~4-5k RPMs to get any sort of "smooth" accelleration. I also got some backfire noises all morning long, and she even died on me at a stop-light. Took about 3-4 retries giving her throttle (with one huge backfire POP) to start her back up.

She still has a warranty until Oct 2012 so I should probably take her to the dealership... ~25 miles away. Any suggestions on what could be wrong? It's an '09 with only 1,350 miles. Only mods are a Drummer SS exhaust and a Internatrix motorcycle alarm.

Thanks in advance, y'all!

I assume it was running fine before the battery replacement

After the battery is removed, the ECM does need a little time to relearn

Stock ECM?

Yes, was running fine before batt. replacement.

Yes, stock ECM. How long does it need to re-learn stuff? One thing I remember this morning was on the IC when I started up the bike, the speedometer didn't stay on 0... it ran up to like 40 or 41mph and then back down. Weird.

If you have a multimeter you may want to check the output to the battery and see if it's normal. Could be a stator or regulator. I've found that the battery lasts about 5 years before failing.

Yup, if the charging system quit working on you, and you put a good fully charged battery in it, It would do what you are describing. It would start and run fine till the battery ran down. Things get ugly after that when the voltage drops. Did you get a battery light or low voltage message?

Relearn...oh-boy..!?
Relearn what...from where, is this hidden material to "relearn"?

Mine must be different. Better memory chips or sumthin...didn't have to "relearn" a thing. Runs just fine after battery swap, about five weeks ago.

Some of you offer up reasons for a good laugh.

Most modern ECM systems learn. Some cars even learn your driving style and modify the shift patterns to match

Per the Buell 1125R Official Factory Manual - 99949-08Y, electrical diagnostic manual:

6.1 DDFI-3 Operation

"the adaptive fuel value, LEARNED during closed loop operation, is applied to open loop operation to adjust fuel and spark maps for optimal performance"}

So Mike, take your better chips and have a good laugh then

Check your battery connections - especially the earth - battery and frame connection. Had a similar fault on an XB - turned out the earth strap had worked loose on the battery.

Not true. The ECM has slow drain capacitors, you would need to be off for a real long time for it to "reset".

I get how the adaptive fuel value learned during closed loop can be applied to the fuel maps during open loop but does anyone know how it could be applied to the spark maps ?

I'm the OP - sorry for the delayed response

My old battery was dead for 1-2 weeks. The new HD replacement battery (same part #) was working beautifully. Was reading 14.2V I think the night I put it in last Friday night (6 days ago).

After this morning's plethora of issues, I did notice that it was down to 12.3V when I parked her. Oddly, the ride home this afternoon seemed better/fine. Didn't hear any backfiring or experience any low RPM issues, but maybe that's because I wasn't in much stop-and-go traffic and didn't hit any lights.

Are the bucking and low-RPM issues normal if the charging system isn't working properly?

My local Buell authorized H-D server shop can't get me in until next Thursday. I still have warranty until Oct 2012, but y'all think it could be stator/voltage regulator?

it's more directly related to batt voltage. I would keep an eye on your charging voltage not the standing batt voltage,do you have the harness upgrade as well?

You can go into LIVE DATA and read your battery voltage when not riding. I'm not sure it works when bike is moving, however.

That would give you some idea of what your battery voltage is looking like.

Ditto. That's EXACTLY what my bike did when the positive battery cable got loose. Check the battery connections.
