Finally had my appointment today for my motorcycle license. I rode my 1125R and am fairly sure I passed before the test even started! The instructor loved the bike and our conversation before the test was longer than the test itself. What really shocked me was that other riders that showed up to take the test weren't even in full gear. Helmets yes, but improper jackets, boots/shoes, and no riding gloves. That was the part I was most worried about. Regardless I am now 100% legal and will be riding my bike more than ever now. The biggest restriction with my temporary license was no night riding and I work 2nd and 3rd shift a lot so it really hurt my riding to and from work. Consider me very happy today!! | ||

Congratulations on passing. I took it on a Buell Blast with the Harley Davidson Riders Edge Course. There was no way I was going to pass the riding test on my 2003 VROD! | ||

I wanted to take the Riders Edge course and most likely will with my wife as she wants to learn how to ride. Going through the Motor Vehicle Department was just a bit cheaper though! The test just consisted of the instructor following me in a car and telling me what to do through an ear piece. The ear piece was terrible though and had a lot of static to the point where it bothered me. The farther I was from the car the louder the static was. Oh well...its done and I am happy! | ||

Congratulations on the new license! That sounds like your going to have a lot of fun riding, I only have about 3 more months to go and maybe I can get a few weeks of riding before the snow comes in. Anyways congrats. | ||

I was a skilled rider before the Riders Edge Course. I had a permit three times before and never took the test. I learned allot from the class. It was two weekends and a couple hours in a class room. I suffered a little taking the course to get my license with a discounted insurance break due to the Rider Edge Course Certificate. | ||

I thought about taking the test on my 1125r and then settled on taking my Harley. Same thing- they followed me in a car and gave me instructions via ear piece. I was glad I took the Harley as it is a lot slower the testers in the car could keep up - not that I would of speed during the test. In Ontario, Canada the license process is two step- 3 if you count the beginners license. You take a course similar to riders edge and then test at the end of it for a restricted license (the only restriction 0 blood alcohol) and then after 18 months you can test for your full license (where you lose the alcohol restriction- kind of odd since you shouldn't be drinking at all but that is another thing). You don't have to take the course you can just attend to license office and take the tests but if you have the course certificate you get a 40% deduction on insurance- well worth the course fee. I'm personally a big fan of the course- I'd been riding off and on for years but had never bothered with my full license (I'd just renew the beginners license every year). When I took the course I learned a ton. We all pick up bad habits and it is good to have a refresher on our driving and be reminded to be proactive in our riding. | ||

I forgot about the insurance discount for taking the riders edge course. I am going to need to contact my insurance agency to see if they offer one. Thanks all for the congrats. | ||

I recommend you take the MSF courses anyway, you will be much better off in the long run, you will learn a lot too! The insurance discount is just a bonus. | ||

Just curious, are the restrictions on riding due to not taking the MSF course, age, or just a new rider thing where you live? When I took my MC license test (too many years ago -- more than 30!), there wasn't such a thing. Today, here in Texas it's nearly impossible to get a new MC license without taking the MSF course. My wife took the test a few years back and there were no restrictions on her riding, but I'm not sure if that was due to age (forever 21...) or taking the MSF course (or maybe we just done have any restrictions like that here in TX). The restrictions are only when you have your temps. To obtain the temporary license all you have to do is pass a written test at the Motor Vehicle Department(DMV). There are a few restrictions with the temps in Wisconsin, the biggest was the no riding at night which just makes sense for newer riders. I was on my second set of temps which are good for usually the whole summer and finally decided to just take the test. With the license I have zero restrictions. There are basically 2 ways to acquire a motorcycle license here. First is the way I did it which is through the DMV and Second is to take an MSF course which gives you a document at the end of the class if you pass that you take to the DMV and they give you the license. | ||

Chris: Did you go to the West Ave. DMV? The tall guy that gives the road test is a retired state patrol officer. Like you, I took the test on my new 1125r, full gear. And like you, I'm a 2nd shifter, so I could not ride to work until I passed the road test. Congrats and I hope to see you on the roads around here. | ||

The West Ave dmv moved to Golf Road right off of I-94. Nice large facility with a number taking system that allows you to sit and relax until the call you. Seems to take longer than when it was at the West ave facility. Two_seasons..I don't suppose you live off of Moreland Blvd. by any chance?
