I have had my 2009 1125R since the fire sale and have had some minor charging issues but yesterday it left me sitting at a gas station and I had to get someone to come give me a jump.

The first problem I had was last year at homecoming on a ride back from the track I got a system voltage error as I was cruising along. Being a long way from home I was worried and talked to a few people who thought it was going to be a bad stator. I changed my plans an headed for home a day early so if i had any issues I had time to get home. Well I had an uneventful ride home.
Every now and then I will have a problem getting the bike to start (seems like a low battery) when I am out riding, its intermittent, but I would say it seems to happen more so when it is hot(stop and go situations). After lunch with my dad yesterday I decided to take a ride, stopped a few times with no problems, then I stop to get gas and again not enough power to crank the bike over. I got a jump and drove about 15 miles to my parents house and again not enough power. I jumped it again and rode about 10 miles to a friends house. I visited for a bit and when I left the bike fired right up. I rode home and turned the bike off and tried again just because and it started and seems fine like it has enough power.

Its a 2009 with just over 8000 miles. The harness upgrade was preformed when I was at a dealer because of a blowout on my way to homecoming last year about 5000 miles. The bike goes in for some warranty work, clutch weep, bank angle sensor, and hopefully the dealer installed lower that is melting. Does anyone have any advice on if I should push for charging system warranty?

The closest dealer is about 2 hours away so I am just going to leave the bike with them. My warranty will run out in October.

Thanks in advance.

Ryan

It probably will depend on the dealer, but if they frequent Buells they shouldn't give you any fuss over the stator and will probably just change it out for you. They have failed enough that my dealer took my word for it when I said the stator was failing.

Aside the charging issues to expect, check your power wiring.
Especially the connections for the starter.
A few folks have found loose grounds, good culprit for on/off electrical problems.

Are you using the Erik Buell Racing ECM?

No just the stock ECM.

As long as you have warranty have the dealer look into it.

Well I took the bike to the dealership yesterday morning. Went over what I was there for, clutch weep, bank angle sensor, side fairing, and discussed the charging issue with the tech. It went well as the tech happens to be a fellow Buell rider that I had met when on the Res Ride last year. He told me that he didn’t think it would take long and I could wait around town rather then have to make a return trip another day.
There was an issue with the side fairing melting because if it is bad instillation they won’t cover it and that let them to the conclusion that it would not be covered. I took a few minutes and called Buell Customer Service and explained that the heat shield had been blown off the fairing because of inadequate adhesive and allowed it touch the pipe and burn through leaving no shielding for the fairing. I had to wait on hold for a bit but the CS rep said she would have to talk her tech and get back to me.
So we took in some local sights and had lunch killed some time and stopped back later in the day and everything was done but the tech noticed during the oil check procedure the strange voltage readings that he was seeing. He recommended I leave the bike so they could charge the battery and do further testing on the charging system. They also asked about the harness upgrade because the dealer that put it one never filed the paperwork but I am sure it was done when I blew out my tire on the way to homecoming last year.
I also took the opportunity to change over to Amsoil because I did not bring any Mobil1 and they were going to need to add some oil after doing the clutch fix.
Now I get a chance to spend some time with my neglected S3 and after this morning’s ride I am looking forward to it. Man these tubers are fun! If I could just get that engine in.....

How could you not know if the harness upgrade was done or not? It's right under the seat and quite obvious.

I never took the seat off after the upgrade to look and just assumed that the extra time I spent at the dealership that day was because they were doing it. I don't think the tech took the seat off either but was referring to the computers saying that it had not been completed. Maybe it was because I had one dealership order the part and then had a different dealership install it because I happened to be there for a tire change when I was on the road.

It would be nice to get a new stator, regulator and battery but I’m not sure that will happen and even if it does, we all know that is not the fix to the problem. I just hope we can see what the Erik Buell Racing 1190RS is running in there and hopefully it will be compatible with our bikes.

Tech from the dealership called today. He said after the battery was fully charged everything tested good and I can come pick it up anytime. Well I am happy to get my bike back I still wonder why I was left stranded if nothing is wrong. I guess I am just going to have to ride the hell out of it or sell if i find a buyer. I like the bike but I think I will like an Erik Buell Racing original better when they come out with one that suites me.

My 1125 had all the same issues. The recall for the wiring harness should fix you up. My fairing came with the bike so after arguing with the dealer for a while I got them to cover a full replacement. On the 2nd set I installed some 1/2 inch bushings to pull the lower edge out and insured there is a gap between the exhaust and the fairing. The shield does try to come unstuck. I've seen some other people who used some aftermarket adhesive shielding which might adhere better.
