Ok it's been a very long time since I started this, but finally back on the road now. The air ducts are finished, everything is foam taped and sealed. I still have to make the aluminum grills for some of the intake scoops, but at least I was able to get out on the hi-way for some preliminary testing. In town the engine temperature was up around 95 deg C, once on the hi-way that drops to about 75 C with the occasional 73 showing. I believe that the thermostat opens at 72.5 C so I would not expect to see anything lower then the 73. The sad thing is that no matter what the coolant temperature it seems that as long as the bike is moving, the left fan is going to stay running. I think some re-programming is definitely in order. It seems that E.B.R. is reluctant to do this though. Or they were just to busy what with the 1190 going into production. I will try again a little later with the ecm programming request. I will post some pics a little later, my camera is still in my buddy's garage.

Now on with the grill making ..... then the rear spring swap ..... then the 08 stator/flywheel upgrade ..... then the muffler adapting ..... then the ...

OK, Today I looked down and saw an engine temp of 72 degrees, definitely frosty. But I guess the California trip next month will be the real test.

OK, the comments will be a bit fun. In order of the pictures. #1 This one is actually nearing the end. it shows the ECM in it's new location, mounted just above the stator cover (lower right side of picture. It also shows about how much of the pod (scuffed up black part) is to be removed. Also look at pictures # 8 and #12

I was wondering about the fans--if they turn off at speed, since with the EB R ECM, they seem to run just about constantly once the bike is up to operating temperature. Many years ago in auto tech classes, the instructor told us that the cooling fans in cars were set to turn off above 30mph or so, because beyond that speed, the spinning fans would actually restrict the airflow caused by the vehicle moving. I don't know if that's necessarily true, but I can't imagine there being much improvement in cooling if the bike is moving at 50mph or more.

Picture #2m #3 and #4 all show the inlet ducts. #4 shows what the rad will be mounted up against. The round foam taped area is the same diameter as the fan and matches it on the other side of the rad. There is a divider down the centre to force more air through the rad, as the duct feeding the rear half does not protrude far enough forward to force air into the front half of the fan.
Pictures #3 and #4 are the same ,just different angles. You can see the large duct feeding the rear third of the rad. This section is actually fed by both the inner scoop from picture #1 and by a very large front scoop formed by the inner rad mount and what's left of the outer pod. The other two areas to the front of the rad, upper corner and lower corner are each fed by the front scoop visible in picts #3 and #7

Flesh, I can tell you that the left hand fan NEVER shuts off with the original ECM. I've looked down at the temp gauge and seen temps as low as 72 degrees C, and still the left fan was running. I am trying to convince the good folks at E.B.R. to custom program an ECM for me (left fan on at 90 Deg C and right at 100) In town on a warm day the temp often goes above 100 so both fans would be on any way. On the highway I would prefer that my soon to be installed 08 flywheel and stator could be used to charge my battery, run ignition, headlights, fuel pump and charge the battery NOT wasted uselessly running the fan/s

Pictures #5 and #6 show the ECM, ECM heat shield and silicone anti vibration mounts (thanks Ducati). Pictures #7 and #8 show that there is room for the fans to be mounted outboard of the rads and still clear the pods. (This should work even without the fairing. The pods would just have to be effectively vented toward the rear)

Picture #9 is just me adjusting the (funnel) so it lines up properly with the fan on the other side of the rad. Picture #8 also shows one of the mounting points for the fan motor . (formerly used to mount the coolant reservoir. the other mount is not visible but is/was the upper reservoir mount.

Picture #10 shows the outer vent or fairing door as Honda likes to call them (from a couple of CBR 600 F2's) one yet to be trimmed and the other having had that (purple yellow and white) much trimmed off

Do you have an ecm cable? If so, changing the fan on/off parameters is pretty easy.

No, Avc, I don't. I didn't think that this was something that I could do myself. I will still need another ECM once I install the aftermarket muffler. Seems it would just be easier and make more sense for the E.B.R. boys to do this before sending it out to me. I f they wont' then I will be checking back with you in order to find out exactly what I will need.

Sheesh ..... even Burger King knows people just gotta have it their way

Avc, is it possible to modify the EB R ECM parameters? I thought the $750 software package (or whatever it is) would be required for end-user mods to the ECM.

AJ, I like your fan speed idea. I'd like to have the fans kick on around 195F and off around 185F--give or take. I pretty much don't want them to be on when I'm cruising down the road at 40mph (50mph?) or more.

Wish I had known/understood what you're doing and gotten the pix in the right order.

I think Flesh is right, you'll have to get the $750 ECM.

Those of us in cooler climates may actually have better use for this than y'all down south.
I'm thinking this might make my legs warmer in the Winter, and that's a GOOD thing when it's 17 degrees outside.

I'm sure the design intended as cool a rider area as possible, but..
When it's cold outside I really pinch the frame... summertime - no.

I'm very interested in real world results and how it feels as the rider, as well as engine performance.

Send me pix anytime, I like where you're going.
If you need small parts, I have a bench lathe & mill.

That's the cooling mods (all but) done. Phase two, 08 stator / flywheel and Compufire installed and testing
I really do need to spend some time on the finishing off bit though. My 1125 is quickly becoming a "RAT BIKE"

I was not planning on riding this morning. I was supposed to be working on my R/R mounting bracket, but my buddy wanted to go for a ride. And it was sunny. So off we went. Any way I did not wear my usual (Ducati) leather pants, instead just jeans. I felt no warmth on the outsides of my legs at all. I am sure if you just vent the back of the pods and do the duct work you could have some very toasty legs ...... But what to do when you don't want toasty?

Any way happy to report my coolant temperature was low and my voltage was high ..... so all is well in Dennon's world
