A little background on my bike. I have an 09 CR with 8800 miles on it. Had the harness put on at about 5000 miles, had a new stator and new battery put on at 6000 miles. I chose to upgrade to a FH012AA regulator. I am running this regulator with the upgrade harness.

Well today I was riding and I noticed some unusual behavior from my IC. Shortly after, I got a CEL and a system voltage error. I quickly switched to my voltage and saw it in the 15.1-15.5 Volts range. I kept my stock regulator mounted so I immediately pulled over and switched my connections back to the stock VR. I drove home no problems thinking my FH012AA had failed. Later I went to go for a ride and before I even got to the end of my driveway the system voltage error was back and my instrument cluster shut off for about 5 seconds.

Any idea what the problem could be? I surely couldn't have fried two VR's in one day? I took my Erik Buell Racing ecm out and still got the system voltage error.

Check your codes.

I wish I would have checked the codes before I put my stock ecm back in. I did have a code for lowfuel sys b1005. What would cause this? Tomorrow I will take the bike out and see if I can get the system voltage error again to get a specific code for it.

I plugged in my Erik Buell Racing ecm to see if the code would still be in it and it came up comm error U0001.

I did more testing today. I was able to repeat the comm error on the factory ecm. I decided it wouldn't hurt to test the bike without running the upgrade harness. I could NOT get any errors again. Baffled, I decided to check the harness and I determined my relay for the upgrade harness is shot. It is getting power to the relay but after checking continuity, the relay is not changing state with voltage applied. I'm still confused. Why would only running 2 legs of the stator allow my voltage to creep so high?

do you have ground to the control side of the relay? the relay always has power with the engine running. the ecm controls the ground side

Yeah the ground is functioning properly. I had a spare relay in my toolbox and it works great now.

sounds like a ground issue to me .
Likely on both r/r's
