I'm watching a special on speed on my hero and auto god Carroll Shelby. I cant help but notice the similarities between these 2 legends. Both farmers both racers both mavericks both innovators. Rock on and long live 2 of my favorites in motor sports

both EB and CS grew up on farms both started wrenching on farm equipment. There is a really good piece in the june issue of AMA's mag on Erik(Erik Buell's second coming) where he talks about his roots Carroll was known for racing in his overalls he was a chicken farmer. I don't know what kind of farmer Erik was.

Hm.

I own three of Carroll's cars, and five of Erik's motorcycles.

Coincidence?

probably...I'm not that smart....

I put 140K miles on an 85 GLH Turbo that had GLHS Charger Konis, lowered, Mopar performance poly stub strut bushing, sway bar bushings custom lower control arm bushing/bracket for sway bar, solid motor mounts.... That was one of the best cars I have ever owned. The 89VNT, red w/gold wheels is the best of your brood. Before I went back to school I sold several
of those red rockets for the local dodge dealer. I always wanted one but couldn't afford it.

Yeah, 135 is actually the SECOND VNT I've had. First, 263, sacrificed itself to save me against a telephone pole (if they didn't plant those things so damn close to the road...). 135 is a documented, 2-option, autographed, 50k mile original. I think it was Mopar Action that featured MY car, while it was still owned by the guy I bought it from, Roger Crawford. MY car has been in a magazine! : ) *I* sold *Carroll* a turbo with that car, we were at VIR for a Shelby day.

Picture, if you will...

A "parade lap", I want to say 2001.

Carroll? Series One. Pole.

Cobras next on the paddock.

Then Mustangs.

Then us "biker trash" Dodge guys.

No passing. Black flag instantly, off the track, no question.

So, here I am poking down one of the straights at about 90...and I start rocking side to side as Carroll BLASTS past me in the S-one. Bag this. Downshift twice, hammer it.

End of the "parade lap" (which turned out to be five or six of the most glorious laps I've ever experienced), the finish was:

Carroll
EVERY SINGLE DODGE
One Cobra
Most of the Mustangs
The rest of the Cobras (trailer queen cars).

We all went back to the paddock. Us biker trash guys were relegated to the OUTER paddock. It was about 110 degrees on the track, they had Carroll in full Nomex. I had just let my turbo idle down and shut off...and here comes a golf cart.

With Carroll.

First place he went? Dodge. After going RIGHT PAST the Mustangs and Cobras on the way.

I run a TEC super 60 VNT on my car. MUCH larger than the stock VNT25, and I have a custom cal with a 3 bar MAP sensor, boost goal is 22psi. Carroll looks under my hood...peeks behind the intake...calls over his engineer.

"Um...*we* didn't put that in there did we??"

Heheh...I hooked him up with my guy, and he bought one as soon as he got back to Vegas. For his GLHS. Which is a 16v head, 2.2, VNT car - NOT a Lotus (Spirit R/T) head, but a Cosworth head prototype - that puts about 340hp to the front wheels on pump gas.

I gotta get mine out of storage. I'm putting an engine in my 87 right now - built a 2.5 with a 70 trim Garrett T2, +40s, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 3 bar MAP, underdrive pulley, A/C delete, dual core intercooler, A568 Getrag...it's getting there. Once that's back on the road (I was running 11s with it before I popped the engine last time), I have to get the VNT out. I scored TWO SETS of original brand new 225/50-15 Gatorbacks recently, so I can put new shoes on the Fiberides. The S60 turbo, 2.5" exhaust, and Ed Peters ceramic coated / ported intake are the only mods.

I miss driving it, but life has gotten in the way over and over again whenever I've tried to get 'er out in the daylight : (

My other toy car is a one-owner 1991 Daytona C/S (AGS) Competition Package car, documented by Chrysler as one of 150 AGS cars and one of 26 in my color combo. 74k miles, white with maroon interior, 2.5 turbo/5 speed, white 16" aluminum wheels.

Yeah.

I love boost : )

Well, here's my 89, peacefully slumbering in storage. The cover next to it has my 91 Daytona:

And here's the 87 as I was pushing it into the garage for its engine transplant. You can see the GLHS under a cover in the background.

When I sold cars the salesmen would be tasked with moving the cars once they got off the trucks. You could tell the difference between a normal 2.2 shadow automatic and a normal 2.5 shadow automatic the second you stepped on the gas. a 2.5 built sounds like a torque lovers choice.

that 89 is gorgeous!

Thanks. The 89 is kinda my baby. I need to get the poor gal out to play sometime.

Even my Daytona, with a stock 2.5 that I changed from a Mitsu turbo to a Garrett, is a beast. Stock injectors and still not intercooled.

But that VNT...hoo, boy. Talk about torque. Turbo lag? You can't even say "lag", before that car is at max boost : )

Ive got an 87 GLH that I bought with around 200mi on a totally rebuilt drivetrain. Bought it for $500 because the owner let it sit and the chassis rusted out. Nothing like burning tires through 3 gears while seeing the asphalt through the floor...

That's just brought back my first case of car-lust (1968 or 69, I think).
Replicar or not, I want!

I'd love to build a replica - a 427SC kit, with a Viper V10.

Old Cobra / new Cobra : )
