Fellow BW members,

After 2 years of enjoying the bike the 12K service has come due and Ive decided to tackle it myself - Ill post results when done. I manged to get through most of the engine rotation but had to skip over the fuel line removal as I couldn't get it to separate. Im at the point now where it needs to come apart as Ill be rotating down to check the front valve lash. Ive taken the fuel lines off of several cars, foreign and domestic, and it don't get much easier than sliding a plastic tool down the line. However, when it came to the Buell I saw the 2 clips and thought, "finally, a tool-less fuel line." I got the two clips to pop out without breaking (*sign of relief*) and it wouldn't come apart any further. Tried to reassemble to see how it works and the clips wont engage closed. Though maybe it takes a tool after opening the clips but it don't look like there's room for a tool to slide in there (the fuel line and rail connection) plus the service manual doesn't say anything about a tool in either the rotation or fuel sections - and we all know HD plugs their tools/parts. How did you all get it to come apart? I hope when I read this in the morning it will have already come to me, rather embarrassing but asking beats breaking - its almost 4 now so that may have something to do with it.

Thanks all,

~C

if i remember correctly, push tab into the line to disengage and then pull apart. i will be taking the tank cover off the race bike later and will verify

The hot a** AZ sun must've fused these parts together. I tried both of your advices and it wont seem to separate - I only managed to break off ~1/4 of the end of one of the clips - it should still work so its no problem.

If I'm understanding Smoke & Dktech correctly - before I tried to take it apart the fuel line had their 2 tabs parallel to the line, i.e. they were laying flat to the line. Then I am suppose to pop the tabs up so they are about perpendicular to the fuel line (this is where I tried puling them apart this morning to no avail). Am I suppose to then push the tab 'between' the adjoining space of the line/rail, as in use the inside edge of the tab like a screw driver to separate the line/rail? Doing this doesn't seem to separate them & is when I broke a piece of the tab off. Gentling using a small screwdriver also yielded no results. I must be missing something elementary - if only printed manuals were available as video manuals.

I'm now dreading putting them together as I haven't managed that either. Perhaps getting them apart will enlighten how to put them together.

Thanks again,

~C

lesson one - the tabs are strong but not enough so to do any heavy work.

clbofaz,
this should literally take 3 seconds, you push DOWN on the tab, push it into the fuel line and hold it, then pull the fuel line straight back, it will pop right off.
