So went for. Ride today and got home to find the the spring and mounting arm for the side stand on my CR was gone.

Stand just dangles loosely.

So with the way my local dealer orders parts won't have new bits for like 6wks.

I spent a couple bucks (like $20 I think)to get the whole sidestand from Erik Buell Racing. Now I have the spring available for the inevitable break, and I intend to powdercoat the new sidestand black.

The thing showed up in like 4 days or something. Just sayin' . . .

Knock wood, been lucky so far and I am happy to make HD pay up on the extended warranty, but I went ahead and bought a spare stand from Erik Buell Racing because it is a stupid reason to be without a bike while waiting weeks for the glacial HD parts machine to make good.

Before it happens, does anyone have a suggested cure? Perhaps a good method to secure the spring, etc.

IIRC someone had drilled the swingarm anr wire wrapped the pivot.. That way if/when the spring broke they wouldn't lose it all..

Personally, i just make sure I have a spare in the garage, having had one go on me (the old style spring) I like knowing I have it there "just in case"

i believe the new part you would be ordering is a revised design.

but i have used velcro strap to secure it up when mine have broken.

I carried some small plastic zip ties in the tool kit for when that (inevitably) happened. They work perfectly and when you come to your stopping point, you can pop it off with pressure from your boot on the kickstand and then just re-zip tie it when you take off again.

Jjk, that's gheto-fabulous!

There was a recall on the spring. OP should have HD check the VIN to ensure the recall was performed.

dont ever remember their being a recall for the kickstand spring. i know the revised part is different.

guess i could double check both my 1125's for recalls when im at work tomorrow, but last time i looked there were none open on either of them and ive had the old spring break on both.

I don't think it was a recall, but a "service bulletin" or whatever they called recalls that they didn't wanna call a recall.

I did the zip-tie thing, and it works great.

Also, leave it first and lean it up against the gas pump at stops. That works pretty well.

Recall by any other name is still (in my mind) a recall.

This happened to me a couple weeks ago. My harley shop said they wouldnt fix it but they could order the parts for me. I think it was about $17, wish I would have thought to look at Erik Buell Racing...

Anyway, the parts only took a week to come in but I didn't want to let the bike sit. I got it home that day by holding up the kickstand with my foot on left turns.

I stopped by the local ACE and picked up a generic spring, probably for a screen door or something and put that on there in the interim. May want to try that, sounds more sturdy than a ziptie or bungee. You just attach it to the same places the normal spring/arm would attach.

Just be aware that without that arm the spring won't go over center unless you do it manually. Which means if you take the weight off the stand it will immediately snap up.

I emailed Erik Buell Racing on Monday but no response yet. There are a few on ebay. The issue is not cost really its getting it here.

Our postal service is set to go on strike. Thats gonna suck.

My local shop takes weeks and months to get stuff in. 4wk for the stator. 6 weeks for frame paint for my old XB. And its been 4+ wks for frame paint for my CR with no end in site. Aside from oil filters I try not to get anything from them.

I had ordered side bags from them once and after 3 wks found out thet hadn't even placed the order yet. 3wks later still nothing. Bought them while on a trip through Missoula. Store shipped them expidited them to my house. 2wks or so later I get a call from my dealer saying then bags would arrive in 2-4 wks.

So yea, my store sucks. : (

Put a bungee on and it sucks. When I get the new one I will figure out a fix. ; )

Kinder,
If you're in a jam, I can mail you out my spare stand. I also purchased it on Erik Buell Racing for that 'just in case' moment.
PM me to work out details...

So got new stand in. Here's what I did for a 'fix.'

found a small hard rubber cap of some sort. (it was on the shelf and looked the right size.)

Cut it a bit

Grabbed some glue

Stuck it into the open space where the assembly seems to pivot and come off.

So it acts like a bit of a stop so the thing can't pivot to the wider opening and come off.

I was gonna use a retainer clip but that would requier some dremling to shave some metal away to make space.

So far so good.
