So I had the CEL and LFL at cold start up issue the past 2 winters and have printed off all the posts from Anony and Zac detailing the 2 failure modes and what the fix is. Even have a video of it doing it, along with a picture of the 5.1.1 SW tag on the back of the cluster. I happened to be near my dealership in my cage (hour from home) and stopped in to discuss all of the info I had collected hoping it would short cut the process some.
Nope - basically they told me they would have to physically diagnose before they could order a new cluster. Problem is, I'm not sure what they are going to diagnose now since the temperatures has warmed up and I no longer get the lights @ start up. My assumption was that the diagnosis for failure mode 1 was to look at the software version on the back of the cluster and if it's 5.1.1 then diagnosis stops and you order a new cluster.

So I'm willing to go along with the diagnostic session at this point, but have no interest in making multiple trips for what sounds like a well know problem/fix when I get the "we couldn't find anything wrong" answer. Wife and I work full time and we have 4 kids, so free time is something I don't have.

I do understand where the dealer is coming from, especially considering they have not physically inspected the bike yet, but is there really anything to diagnose other than the the SW tag on the back?

Thought about calling customer service to plead my case to see if they would pre authorize the dealer to order the IC, but not sure if they would go for it.

Anybody got a better solution, or should I just smile and eat the day of down time and $15 in gas for the dealer to hopefully conclude what I've already learned from this board?

The dealer can't just take your educated opinion on the repair... You have to let them go thru the procedure.

Depends on the dealer... mine's happy to take my word for the diagnosis as long as I walk them through it logically...

I'm just waiting for the new fuel pump and sensor to arrive, I just explained the issue and the diagnosis, plus details from Badweb posts and they ordered it up...

I had the LFL/CEL on my 09 1125R in the first winter of ownership together with bad condensation, I followed the diagnostic procedure in the factory manual and recored this together with the LFL/CEL lights going out when heat had obviously warmed the fuel up.
The Buell MOCO fix was to upgrade the IC to a revised coding that either changed the process of checking the fuel level thermistor at start up or did away with it altogether.

I recorded the entire process, the dealer believed me but still needed to put the bike onto the HD diagnostic tool to record the issue onto HD net.
A revised IC was fitted under warranty, I assume that you will have to let them have the bike to confirm the issue.
Changing the coding in the IC was obviously far cheaper for Buell Moco than changing fuel pumps/level sensors in every bike effected.

That sucks to hear that it's a bit of a process to get a new cluster. My '08 was completely dead (not even a glimmer of light from anything when turning the key on) this morning. It's only the second time that it has done this in a year and a half of ownership, so I really doubt it will be something that the dealership can replicate. Not to mention that the closest dealer is an hour away which makes it a little inconvenient.

How much does a new '09+ cluster cost? It might just be worthwhile to buy one myself rather than wasting the trips to the dealer plus the bike downtime.
