When the subject of Buells being American sport bikes comes up, what parts exactly are fully American made? (Not looking to start a patriotic based thread here, just want to know what to tell people when they ask.)

I know for sure the frame, swingarm, body plastics. Obviously there is more, but I don't have a piece by piece breakdown. : )

The ecm too!
I know the 1125 was built under harley, so I'm sure many parts were outsourced for cost cutting, but on the 1190rs, a lot more parts are american.

Get an 90% outsourced bike (1125) and only pay $12,000 MSRP (when they were still making them.) Get a bike that is 90% American (1190RS) and you get to pay $40,000+.

I love the 1190, and if I could, I would buy one in a heartbeat. But I'll stick with my "mutt" bike assembled in the USA, but with parts from everywhere. : )

The 1190 still has a lot of foreign origin parts. The motor is one obvious example.

I don't think this takes anything away from the bike... it's a global economy.

I like the comment that says "what makes the product American? "The idea" "

I can assure you that Erik Buell himself is American, and bet he wouldn't side step if we asked to see his birth certificate! It's Erik's ingenuity and uniqueness along with the "rule changing" technical designs that grabbed my attention and sold me on my first Buell, the XB9R. The heart and soul of all Buell motorcycles is 100% American, and that to me is what's important.

I try to buy American products when ever possible, but because of the global economy it is becoming increasingly difficult. I just bought a Timken wheel bearing (American company) for my Chevy Aveo (re-badged Korean built Daewoo) and stamped right on the box "Made in Turkey".

Also, just recently bought a new tail light assy for my Road King at my local HD dealer, bought genuine HD product (at a premium price I might add) and in genuine HD packaging and clear as day stamped on the box "Made in Taiwan".

Juniorkirk, I agree buy you need to remember that a good chunk of that $40k is due to top shelf and exotic components like magnesium wheels and titanium valves. A more civilian version would be much cheaper while still maintaining its domestic parts content.

Even Ducatis have parts not made in Italy. A lot of BMWs have motors assembled in places where they don't yodel. Buells are innovative American designs. The Ulysses actually was a great alternative to a GS, the XBs were the real HD sportbike and the 1125s are the first American V-twin Superbike--of which a new generation has begun! The bottom line, profits, were staying here, not going somewhere else. Now, if only the US oil companies switch us to NatGas so we stop burning our money and sending it elsewhere...

Hybridmomentspass + Jgarner99 - You are right I am wrong. I am as guilty as anyone.
I am trying to raise the bar on myself and apparently others. I know not my job, darn evangelical brainwash is still there after 30 years.

Fireboltxb9r I apologize about the troll comment. The birther argument is as worn out as my original Corsa III's with 9700 miles on them. The sides are still there but the center is almost gone. This can happen when both sides are kept well inflated. reread the last two sentences, politics or motorcycles?... :-)

If your mother was an American pregnant in Norway when you were born you would still be an American.

By the way . . . . took me a while . . but I sorted through and bought ALL AMERICAN bulbs in 200W . . . and Canadian and one Chinese in 150W. There were no American Made 150W.

Bought tools yesterday . . . all Klein . . . . made in the USA. There was a time when Irwin, who make Vise-Grip, was Made in the USA. When they announced they were moving production overseas I went and stocked up on all the MADE IN USA Vise-Grips I could find.

I always recall . . .when I bought my Harley-Davidson in 1987 . . . how disappointed I was to learn how much of it was made overseas. In 1987 . . . it was a much bigger deal.

Now there are somethings . . . . as the Purchasing Engineers are Erik Buell Racing have learned . . that are no longer available (like 150W G.E. light bulbs) sourced in America.

Dannybuell...no apology necessary. I actually got a chuckle out of your reply. I was simply making a feeble attempt at humor (dated as it may be) and not trying to insight a political debate. The other points I made were just recent personal experiences and the venting of frustration in not being able to easily keep my hard earned money within our borders.

My apologies for the "pot calling the kettle black" commentary. It was a long week for me, and I vented by being smart-alecky.

But yes, very misleading tag

Mcrbuelligan, no.

Buell's have only been made in the US and Brazil, and the Brazil bikes were never sold here.

There may be a few parts made in Mexico, but thats it.

Plastics are American. Frame, I think, made in Italy. Most of the metal made in Taiwan. Headlight made in Italy, heated grips made in Germany.
