Early next June I'll be attending an advanced drive course in Vallelunga, a famous racing track close to Rome, which is about 500 km far from home. I'm attending with my 1125R. I'm not afraid of reaching the place on the bike (I often drive to Rome on my V-Strom) but I think that 500 km on a highway might have bad effects on the shape of the tyres (I have the original Pirelli Diablo Corsa III with 2200 km to date). What do you think? Should I look for a trailer?

Yes. In my opinion, you should go to the track with few, fresh tires, not ones with dozens of heat cycles.

The other option is to ride your bike there and have the tire dealer at the track put the fresh ones on for you.

It is hard for my to imagine riding to a track that far away. You will have no easy way of bringing fresh clothes, snacks and water. At the end of the track day you will need to rest near the track for a night before riding home -- it's sure nice to have these things.

Well, yes, I plan to sleep in an hotel nearby the night before and the nigh after the course. However it's not going to be a track day. I'm going there to learn driving techniques (not racing) and we're gonna follow theoretical lectures as well as practice session on the track.

An alternative would be to install a good set of sport touring tires on your bike, like Michelin Pilot Roads or Pirelli Angels. They're dual compound (harder rubber in the center) and would likely not suffer a big change in profile on a trip that long. I would think they'd be fine (sticky enough) for the kind of riding you'll be doing at a training course.

I Have been more than happy with the Pilot Road 2's. Living in Florida tends to square off the rears. Doesn't happen with the PR2s, but they still have plenty off stick when leaned.

Sounds like a normal days riding with some training. Ride there and do the day and ride back. You're not going racing and all out which would be tough on the tires. After you are done, 3,500km on the tires you should be fine!

You will get a better idea by how the tires look now, some riders eat tires, some get many miles but arrive just as quickly.

Sounds interesting, report back on how it went, please.

I would trailer it. 1000Ks on the superslab sounds harsh and your tire profile will thank you too.

Giuseppe if you mount new tires right before you go to the course the 500ks (approx 312.5 miles) will just be about the correct amount of mileage to break the tires in. Profile shouldn't change that much in that distance. Enjoy

If you've got 2200km on your Corsas, they'll probably be worn out around when you get back from the trip. Most people seem to get around 2500 miles out of the rear, which is what you'll be pretty close to if you add 1000km of interstate and a couple hundred km of track/training riding.

My first recommendation would be to trailer your bike there. The last thing I'd want to do after spending all day on the bike is add another 500km of interstate on the way home--I'd much rather sit in a car, turn on the cruise control, and turn off my brain. (Not all the way--but it does require a lot less brain power to drive rather than ride.)

If you want to ride to the event, you may want to plan on having a new rear tire installed there, to prevent your rear wearing out completely before you get home. Or, if you're feeling brave, just do the whole thing on your existing tires and cross your fingers!

My fear is that 500 km of mostly straight highway might flatten the central part of the tires. The Corsa are double compound though...

In 2008, I made the Homecoming trip from Colorado.
By the time I got there, my tires were in bad shape - front was a triangle and the rear was squared.

2 Road America "parade laps" at speeds in excess of 100 reshaped my tires to "like new" profile.

I wound up getting 7k miles from that rear, so far my best distance with the Corsa IIIs.

just sayin'...
