After being quoted $650.00 for the 12,000 mile service on my R I wanted to see how hard it is to do. I've done all the work on my Cyclone, but just want to see how hard it is to work on the R. I dont really know what im getting into with the valves and spark plugs. Thanks for any help | ||

Buy a manual and do it yourself, this bike is a joy to work on, rotax have done a great job with the engine. | ||

That quote sounds about right. I paid about the same amount to have the VTEC inspection done to my 6th Generation VFR800. Par for the course. | ||

For me, it depends on how much I need that bike on the road. $0.50/mile is a big deal to me. If you are like me, it will take you a couple of weekends to complete, but then you'll know a lot more about your bike too. I plan on doing my own service work from now on. The 1,000km service cost me over $200 and they overfilled my crankcase. Did it again for routine oil change that I needed quick, so the quick part became mute, as I then needed to drain the excess out. And this was with a shop that used to race Buells too! When I don't want to do it myself, it will be done by a non-HD trained tech. Can't justify the cost at the HD dealer and then wonder if they actually did it correctly. I guess I could find another HD dealer and try them out, but my gut tells me they probably won't care any more about my Buell than the last one did. The only plus is parts availability as it should be right there, but even that isn't always the case as other threads have pointed out. Bottom line for me is their attitude. | ||

Agreed...get a manual...and if you are fairly mechanically inclined....do it yourself. Don't give Harley that much money...! Mike | ||

If you can find a good Buell dealership with solid Buell techs, I definitely prefer them to do the work. But I've got a dealership an hour away with an older service tech who has owned Buells going *way* back, and puts absolutely stupid numbers of miles on them. His 08 1125R is over 80k miles right now. I trust him to work on my 1125  | ||

Just have them do valves and spark plugs, wheel bearings. You can check everything else yourself. oil, air filter, coolant, brake and clutch fluid. The price should drop a few hundred. Mine was done around $300.00 for valves, plugs and checking of bearings. I provided plugs. | ||

I have found most HD dealers can't be trusted with an oil change, let alone something as important as a valve adjustment. I hear it is very easy to drop a shim int he engine on these bikes, if that happens, do you think a Harley tech is going to take the time to fish it out of the engine? Last time i took my bike to the Harley dealer for warranty work, when i brought it in no CEL, when i picked it up the CEL was on, that should say enough. | ||

Feeler gauges and patience. A bike rack would be nice to have, but it can be done without one. Just need a way to secure the bike in an upright position and allow for either rotation of the motor or frame removal. Strapping it down is a must in my opinion if you do it without a bike rack/lift. |
