I got a '09 1125R, I bought the factory lower fairing when I purchased the bike, painted it white to match.

I was sure I saw a thread on here on mounting tips, something like adding extra washers, and heat shield material?? I want to do it right when I put it on so if anyone knows the thread or knows what I'm talking about and can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks. PS. I originally posted this in the bodywork section, got no response. Was hoping maybe someone would see it here and respond w/ requested info. thanks.

I used neoprene spacers (1/8) on the lower rt. side brackets. Keeps the fairing off the pipe. Also ordered the adhesive heat shield material from Al at American Sport Bike and put a small patch of it in right where the header (almost) touches.

You MUST put your own aftermarket heat shielding on the inside of the right side (throttle side) fairing. The factory puffy head shielding doesn't hold up. Otherwise the exhaust will start melting through the plastic.

I agree and disagree with Smit. He's right to an extent that the factory heat shield can loose adhesion (that's what happened to mine). I never had any issues with the factory heat shield not shielding heat once I had the lowers adjusted properly.

My heat shield came loose and folded up at the track at 150+ MPH.

If I were you, just use the factory shield for now and monitor it. When/if it comes loose or falls apart then remove it and replace it. Too easy.

I did - it "bubbled" quite quickly even though I'd added a spacer and bent the bracket.

Extra heatshielding is CHEAP and really easy to apply so why risk NOT doing it?

I wrapped my exhaust pipe near the fairing, AND added heat shield material after I saw the fairing melting through. I have had no problems since. I also used the washers as spacers on the bottom mounting screws to spread out the fairing just a little.

Definitely use some extra washers to space the fairing out further. I went to the local auto parts store and purchased a roll of the reflective foil tape and used that over top of the factory heat shield and haven't had an issue at all. And it gets HOT here in SC.

I thought the factory method and materials was enough. Frankly, I thought the warnings were overblown

Very soon the adhesive was letting go all over the place, then I noticed the foil was burned through

I used some high temp RTV and kitchen foil to repair it, and it's working well, but I did order more heat shield material and will be reworking it. I've also added the spacers and did a little bracket bending to get that critical clearance

Thanks very much for the info! I think I'll get the extra heat shield, and use the spacers. Now all I got to do is find some cool decals or have some made to break up the acre of white on each side...
Thanks again everybody.
