Has anyone had a problem with their bike dropping a cylinder at highway speeds? Rode my bike last night for the first time with the new Barker pipe. Ran well for the first part of the night. On my way home, while doing about 65-70 in 6th gear @ 4K rpm, the bike starting dropping a cylinder. RPM would drop to 3500 for about 10 seconds, throttle kept in th same position, than the cylinder would come back and rpm back to 4K. When the bike does this, I can also role on the throttle and the problem goes away temporarily. As soon as the rpm comes back down to 4K, the problem comes back. This problem does not exist in the lower gears.
Oh and if it makes any difference, the temp was about 33 degrees. Nice to finally be able to ride in shorts and a t-shirt!

Do a search on a "Denoid" procedure if it hasn't already been done. "08's" have also had fuel mapping issues and going with the aftermarket exhaust probably could aggravate one of those issues.
A Erik Buell Racing ecm might be the cure for your problem.

Thanks for the info, Zane. Ordered the ECM yest. I'm gonna leave the bike parked until it comes in.

Just disconnect the solenoid! no need to park it!

Luise, I denoided the bike last summer, so I don't think that's part of the problem. I just don't want to do any un-neccesary harm to the bike. The weather here in RI is supposed to suck for the next week anyway, so no big loss. The bike did this to me one time last summer after having the 12K service done a little early. Precision HD couldn't give me an answer as to why, but they managed to somehow solve the issue with luck alone.

It wouldn't be a 'noid issue (wrong gear and wrong rev range).. It's possible that it's a fuelling issue (likely even).

What were the AFV values? Did you take a look before you fitted the Barker and after?

It's possible that the reason it ran fine for part of the trip was cause it hadn't adjusted for the new pipe until the ride home.. How long was the trip?

I was just looking a those values. I believe the front was 95 and the rear was 100. I'll re-check. The trip was only about 60 miles total. I never checked before I put the Barker on. I waited 1 day too long to check the Bad Web, I guess. All the advice has been great.

SO, when it's "dropping a cyl" did you try rolling on to WOT?

Did the bike pick up speed?

You will know being one cyl down because even at WOT the bike will barely maintain pace, if run at all...

I have no idea what's wrong. But something that goes "on/off" like that sounds like a loose electrical connection somewhere.

What happens when it's going on and off and you give it a bunch of throttle?

Jdug, the cylinder cuts out around 4k while at a steady speed and stays that way for about 10 seconds or as soon as I roll on the throttle. Once on the throttle, the bike takes off like a rocket. Again, it only seems to happen in 5th and 6th gear.

So, if you generously open the throttle, it takes around 10 seconds to really come on and then it takes off?

No. If it drops a cylinder, it comes back right away if I twist the throttle even a small amount. If I really romp on it it takes off full power. If I hold the throttle steady after it drops the cylinder, it will come back again in about 10 seconds.

Any other mods aside from barker? Usually loss of a cylinder is from lack of spark or fueling issue. Either unable to ignite fuel or no fuel.

That's what I was thinking too, kinder. I'm leaning more towards fuel, because when the cylinder comes back, there's no popping. I figured if that can loaded up with fuel, it would pop like crazy when it came back to life. I'll start checking wiring and connections. If that doesn't cure it, we'll see if the new ECM takes care of the problem. You all are a great help. Thanks again!

In diag mode with TPS showing do get a smooth constant increase in % when you roll the throttle on ? make sure theres no hestitations in the TPS % from 2% idle to 100% WOT

I have seen something similar on a 08 turned out to be in the throttle linkages

I really doubt you are dropping a cyl. I've had a buddy's Ducati do that and you end up riding at nearly WOT just to do 55 or 60.

I think you are just getting some of the surging common on the 08s.

Try this: When you feel the surging, DOWN SHIFT and cruise around 5500 RPM. (it won't hurt the motor -- trust me on this one)

Report back if she's smoother.

Ok. Found that the TPS was reading 2.0 @ idle and 90.0 WOT. Re-calibrated manually, now 2.0-100. It does go up smoothly from idle to WOT. No binding, butterflies open equal. Checked wires going to injectors, all look fine and are firmly connected. As well as wires to coils. I'll have to wait for better weather to check it out. By then the race ECM should be here. Anyone think I should try replacing the injectors as well?

Your problem seems remarkably like mine started

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/620853.html?1300562040

I would think as time goes on you will get a EM light come on, and once you fit the race ECM it will feel flat, if run at all.

Where you based mate ? I'll put a good bet on it being an injector problem. If you have a 08 bike upgrade to the later spec directional injectors, this should cure your problem. Trust me I have been down every avenue.

Thanks Avalaugh. I'm planning on ordering new injectors this week. I read your thread and it sounds the same. There are no codes right now. The bike also now goes down a cylinder for a few seconds while @ idle but then comes back after a few seconds. Checked the AFV values as well: front 94.5, rear 100. Are they supposed to be equal?

Not necessarily equal, but about the same value.

I rode my bike throughout last summer and it gradually got worse but I hadn't noticed as it was over such a long period of time.

Obviously this is only speculation as I'm not there to see your bike, but the injectors are a worthwhile upgrade, and IMO they will cure your problem.

Please let me know how it turns out : )

Anyone who want to know how to check their's
I was wondering so looked it up, save you the time...

Go into Diagnostics Mode.

To do that, press both the Mode and Toggle and turn the key to "run" or "Park".
The display will say DIAG MODE if you do it right, BUELL etc if not.

Once you see DIAG MODE, press the Mode button to advance thru the displays.

When you access DM in the "run" position, you can start the bike and see live data while running.
As soon as you put it in gear and start moving, it drops out of DM tho.

Put the Erik Buell Racing ECM in today. Can't believe the difference. Didn't have a lot of time to ride, but the quick blast I took it on was awesome. It idles better, and the temps seem to be a little cooler. Tough telling since it's 38 degrees. New injectors should be here Monday. We'll see if the hesitation problem exists ASAP. Keep ya posted.

spark plugs........
Just throwing that out there. If your gonna replace the injectors, better be safe and do the plugs at the same time.

Would they have replaced the plugs during the 12K service? I'll check my Buell service manual and see if that's on the list.

Took the bike for a 25 mile run. It seems that the new ECM has solved this issue. Still plan on replacing the injectors next week. Thanks for your help guys!
