There hasn't been a good rainfall here yet, and I'm riding around on salt and sand. My formerly clean bike has stuff all over it now, and I've only gone about 50 miles so far.

How bad is this really? How long do I have to clean it off? What's the best way to clean it?

Even better -- anyone have an experience with this, specifically with an 1125?

Soap and water a.s.a.p. Otherwise, if the bike is kept in a dry place, salt all by itself isn't that harmful. It takes a combination of salt, sand, and moisture to really start eating away at components.

I ride my Buells year round in NY, I've never had a salt issue. There is some corosion and rust on some fasteners, but nothing I can say for sure was salt.

i'm not sure of the long term affects on the 1125. i make sweet love to my bikes after a run around in the salt dust. at the minimum a thorough spray off with the hose, but usually a complete spray with s100 then rinse. i've had zero corrosion issues with five buells now.

Perhaps you have a different type of salt in the USA - here in the UK, the standard exhaust corrodes very quickly due to the use of salt on our roads.

Yeah my exhaust is starting to rust, but other than that the bike is nothing but plastic and aluminum. Neither of which rust.....

Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust refers only to iron and steel corrosion.

Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion. Aluminum oxide corrosion also looks a lot more like aluminum, so it isn't as easy to notice as rusted iron.

So like I tell my wife, it isn't a steel frame like my old harley, I can ride this one more than I have to clean it..... NICE!!

My biggest concern when I ride on salty/dirty roads isn't the corrosion... it's the traction.

Salt will absorb moisture from the air, so corrosion will begin pretty quickly even if it's 'dry'. Wash that stuff off! Different places use different 'salts' and some are more corrosive than others. Around here, we got this big lake full of salt, so that's what they use. Most, if not all are a chloride salt FWIW (sodium, magnesium or calcium chlorides).

My stock muffler has rust spots in certain places and I don't ride the bike much in the rain and we don't use salt on our roads in SoCal. I can imagine what it will do to salted roads with slush, sand, dirt, and water.

I would immediately hose it off with a motorcycle cleaner then dry.

I ride a lot in bad weather and I just got my stock can replaced under warranty. With eight months left on my warranty it had qhite a bit of surface rust and had rusted through on the bottom in the front where I had dinged it a couple of times jumping the curb to park under the overhang at a couple of hotels I have stayed in.It sounded pretty bad ass but they gave me a new one anyway: )FWIW

Wait a minute....rust is covered under warranty? I'll have to check on that.

I think the jury is still out. Some say snake oil, some say problem. I guess I'll hose it off every couple of weeks; it'll at least keep it shiny.

My old Buell, I never washed it. Ever. I got caught in a down pour usually once a month. No rust. Maybe it had Buell chloride treatments?

look at anything down the shore and you will see it gets a beating from the weather. So if you want it to last keep it clean and dry as much as you can.
