So, at a recent East Bay Rats party, a crackhead was slammed into my bike which knocked it over kickstand side - off the curb (parked on the sidewalk). My CR is set up to take falls so I'm not worried about it at all. A scuff on the pod appeared to be the only damage. Ratbikes get scuffs.

However, the next day, a friend through some sort of telepathy, noticed that the bracket that the pod is mounted to was busted.

Since a good number of my friends are welders, the repairs are really not a big deal and if the bike weren't my only transport right now, the job would have been done the next day.

My question is really just a matter of curiosity. Since the pods are designed to take an impact, I would assume the brackets they mount to were as well.

Anyone else have this bracket break? If so, what were the circumstances?

I dropped my R going like 50 mph and the left pod took most of the damage. The k bracket was intact. recently took my bike apart to coat the frame and closely inspected it and still I couldn't find anything wrong. Also a couple of weeks ago I dropped my CR (forgot to put down my kickstand ) . The pod did its job and I only have a scratch on it. Could be just a defect on your bracket. They look pretty sturdy.

Broke mine in a right hand turn at 30 mph at a track-day. Completely snapped.
Bought a new one for over €200,- at the dealer and bid on a complete set of a used bike at e-bay. Got it for only €15,- excluding shipment. I put on the used one. So if anybody needs one? I have got a L and R now.

Well, since I'm getting it welded and will have a brilliant welder in there with me, I'm going to look into beefing it up a little or replacing it altogether.

I like my bikes to be bullet-proof.

Mine vibrated off the kickstand once and I layed it down on an ice patch at 50+ on the same side. Falling off the kick stand did more damage.

Isn't the k bracket cast? Welding a cast piece might not be the best route. Id check with ebr or ebay.

The k brackets are designed to break first, they mount to the engine and the frame, and you don't want either of those to be damaged. Its a smart design imo. My bike went down at 70 mph, rolled 3 times. Pods broke and k brackets held. Go figure.

It's cast AL, it will weld well enough.

Get the whole part hot, use a high-Si rod like 4043, and let it cool slowly.

Yeah, it definitely can be welded.

Honestly, I'd probably replace it except that I have no other transport.

Since this subject came up, how much weight can those brackets support? Would it be a bad idea to sling the front end off the ground with straps hooked to the k brackets? Actually, I have already done it. Was I taking a big risk? If one of those brackets would have broken, I would have had a huge mess.

Mine broke when I t-boned a car that pulled in front of me and I was going 25mph. Broke the right side one and bought one from Erik Buell Racing. They sell them for about $112, plus $10 shipping to me in Cali. Pretty simple install, didn't even have to disconnect any hoses.
