Just bought a Victory Cross Country and rode it to the HD dealer to buy an oil filter for my 1125. No crowd around it when I went outside, but some stares as I left the parking lot. |

The XR1200 is NOT a cruiser. Look at the specs! It's not even the traditional Sportster! It is designed to be the highest performing bike in H-D's lineup. It has the chassis to do that up to a point. It has the same engine as the Buell Thunderstorm but with lower compression, different camshaft, smaller airbox, etc.
In terms of its chassis specs, it is a standard motorcycle that competes in the naked category. Compared to its contemporaries, it pales in comparison. That is exactly the whole point I'm making. H-D designed the XR1200 primarily for Europe and there it competes with other European standards like the BMW R1200R, the Guzzi Breva 1200, the Ducati Monster/GT1000, Triumph Thruxton. |

Am I reading this right - In 2010 the Japanese (I'm assuming they mean all 4) raised sales to 57,000 units and Harley fell to 223,000?
They still sold FOUR TIMES THE BIKES!

from Cycle News, "Worldwide, H-D sales were down 8.5% from 2009 to 2010, though sales increased in Europe and Latin America. And overall international sales were down only 1.9% from a year earlier.
The Company shipped 210,494 motorcycles for the year, a decline of 5.6%."

Worldwide production for Honda=18,111,000...new record
HD has a long way to go to match Honda; much less any other manufacturer. |

Rogue.. it uses the sportster frame it just has a a different swingarm and suspension tweaks.
Its the sportiest sportster...
which is a far cry from any kinda sportbike or a naked sportbike like the Duc Monster.
Sportsters are cruisers.

Thanks for starting my day off with a laugh. Let's be honest . . I had an XR-1000 with the Jerry Branch "Speed Kit" and my out of the box S1 would have thrashed it.
I've had LOTS of Sportsters . . . loved'em, still do . . but it's a LOT of work (go check out the XL Forum) to make a Sportster a "Performance Bike".
Honda makes more motorcycles in a day than HD has ever made in their best year.
But . . and I'll be the first to admit it . . that's not at all a fair comparison. The United States is one of the worst markets in the world for motorcycles (Buell U.S. sales were, if I recall, less than 50%) and the types of bikes we see here don't represent the world stage very well. |

But soon, as bad as it stills stings, hindsight will show that h.d. dropping Buell is the best thing that could have happened...for us the consumer and Erik.
Thats my belief.
...and h.d. hasnt had a product I would buy since my 2001 Super Glide Sport. |

I cut my teeth in 1983 on a 50cc Garelli two stroke. I'm rocking the Uly now (and a KDX-200, and a 1971 Kawasaki Bison, and have enjoyed a KLR-250, an XB9SX, an M2, and a Yamaha 600cc Radian).
Two wheels is two wheels... Loved all those bikes at the time. Happy to be rid of all of them but the Buells. |

I think modern scooter riders are, in general, people who ride because of the convenience and economy of a scooter rather than out of any love for motorcycling. I think that when most of them tire of their scooters, they'll "upgrade" to a car, not a motorcycle.
New bike sales in the US may not be great, but what about used bike sales? New bikes are frigging expensive. Given the choice of buying one brand new bike for $15k or three for a third of that each, I'd do the latter. Which is exactly what I've done. The four bikes in my garage are worth about what one brand new liter class supersport costs. |
