it is my understanding that a new ECM/IC will get written to by the installed IC/ECM upon installation, but what about a used ECM?

if i just plug it in and ride out, will it write to the IC or be written to?
would i have to wipe it and re-flash?
which has dominance over the other?
maybe the ECM has dominance for trouble codes, and the IC for odo?

Odo dominance is by age. New cluster, will pull miles (and VIN/vehicle info) from ECM. New ECM, will pull miles from cluster.

Trouble codes...who cares? If it's historic, you don't need it and if it's active it'll trigger again.

A used ECM...not sure on that. I would *think* (please note that word) that if you don't interrupt power to the IC, it will retain bike information and write it to the new ECM. But again...I'm not sure.

I can check my electrical diag book though...

NOTE
When the IC is replaced, there is a 30 minute timer that counts
down before the information is written to the IC. This is done
so the technician has time to test a new cluster to determine
whether the fault is within the cluster or not before the cluster Serial Data
matches to the ECM. Once the VIN is written to the IC it cannot
be cleared.

So there we go. Once the IC has the vehicle info, it can NOT be rewritten.

And...from later in the manual:

The IC can only have a VIN written to it once. It cannot learn
a new VIN if one has already been written to it. Therefore,
when replacing the IC, it must be a new IC.

agreed, trouble codes are not what really matters.

so, a used ECM cannot re-write the vin to my IC, but will it write the mileage?

No, mileage should stay with the IC as well. If I'm reading it right, only a new IC will 'take' mileage. If an ECM and an IC are connected and both have data, the IC will be dominant for both mileage and VIN.

There is no mention of ECM data exchange that I could find; no warnings similar to what was listed about the IC. That absence tells me that the ECM will 'take' whatever the IC sends it.
