I keep telling myself to hold the RPM's up but at $3.11 a gallon I really don't want to.

I still fail to see the correlation.

5% throttle is 5% throttle, regardless of RPM.

If you're just cruising, ride like you normally do...but in a lower gear. You'll probably notice less than a 1mpg difference, and your stator (hell, the whole motorcycle!) will thank you.

And Froggy, again, doesn't count in MPG debates. He's got some goofy damned riding habits, and he weighs less than my helmet, so it's just not fair to include him!

Glad I bought an 08. Seems like my bike has fewer issues than most of the people posting About them. Battery is 2 years old and I ride at 4K RPM and I use heated apparel in the winter without any charging issues. No problem at all with the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM.

J_copeland,

Be aware, some early Erik Buell Racing ECMs do NOT have stator harness control.

You might be running all 3 legs all the time.

I am still amazed that some people buy 146hp 1125cc sport bikes and then worry about a few MPG. This is a high performance luxury. Rip the $hit out of it. That is what it was made to do. If you wanted fuel economy, you should have bought a scooter.

Yes,I do realize that is possible.

Cold weather is coming and I'll send it to them to make sure I'm good.

Avc8130 and J_copeland

refer to the first post in this thread. if you have an early ebr ecm with out stator control and you have the stator control jumper harness, you should be running only two legs of charging all the time. the ecm isn't supplying the ground to turn the relay on to allow the third leg of charging

Are you sure the ECM is normally "open" if this control is not enabled?

yes, just verified it. 5b2 is the location for stator cooling control config. with it at "81" the ground side is grounded with the key on engine running. with it changed to "00" and the ignition cycled, the ground side is no longer grounded.

let me clarify a bit more. i used my stock ecm for the test listed above. on my version of the ebr ecm, adding the stator control as it is listed in the stock ecm with the same layout, the stator function will not operate. i haven't figured out what it is yet, but there is something else in the eeprom that needs changed on the ebr ecm to allow stator control. i am sure it is a matter of turning on/off another feature that works with on in place the stator control

What qualifies as an "early" E.B.R ecm?
I ordered my E.B.R ecm in July. I've just had the harness installed (and a new stator and battery), is it safe to assume I can put the E.B.R ecm back in or should I email them and check?
cheers,
chili

i bought my race ecm the first week they were on eriks web site, it was the generic, street fuel....when the harness update became available, i spoke directly with east troy, and was told, i didnt need to do anything with the ecm, it would work with the new harness...and 6000 miles later it still does.

new stator 4,000 miles ago and battery light followed by engine light and eventually sys voltage message last night. 3 of those in as many months with 50 degrees F. after a 15 mile ride at night on 40 mph stop and go hwy with light traffic. I stopped and 10 minute's later started out again and the IC light show began.

heat soak or what?

it's easy enough to check for anyone who has a version of the ebr ecm. remove the seat. turn ignition on(both key and switch). see if you have both power and ground to relay on control side. for you guys who have a meter and know how to use it, do so. for those without a meter, simply unplug and reinstall the relay and listen and feel for a click as the relay is energized. no ground or no click means the ecm is not setup for the stator control relay.

on a side note, i found an area in which i plan to test once my boys go down for a nap and i have a chance to get in the garage and do some testing. one of the things that i saw is different between the race ecm and the stock ecm is the spark config bit. the race one is setup for the pit road rev/speed limit feature. i theory(we know how theories work HA), if the pit road function input wire is the same as the stator control, that would explain why my ebr ecm is not utilizing the stator control at this time. will update you all once i know more.

alright, got to the bottom of it. it really should have been easier for me to find out if i just thought outside the box. the black connector pin 21 is the pin that is used to control the stator control relay. on the xb line, that pin is used as a speed sensor output from the ecm to the cluster(i believe that is the correct output vs input). on my eeprom layout, i had to manualy change the stator control data because it was all zeros from 5b2-5c7. with those inputed to the same values as my stock ecm, i still did not have stator control function. the reason is because of the vehicle speed config bit(2e6). the stock on is 0e with my version of the race ecm being 8e. with it in 8e, the speed sensor output takes priority over the stator control output. VS i would imagine is a voltage signal instead of the ground signal that is needed to control the relay. i did not verify if the speed sensor output in the 8e config was voltage or not.....i didn't really care.

bottom line, with 2e6 set to 0e and the stator control data set in the correct cells, all is good.

I'm back from the OEM ECM ride mostly country but the first 10 miles were totally city. Battery light slow to go off on next start up.
Generally averaging higher volts overall.

I just got my '09R back from a stator replacement at 3,100 miles. The subharness was installed at around 2K miles, and I also run the E B R unit. But for the first 300 miles after getting it back, I left the stock ECM in - On the latest OEM flash.

It charges higher with the stocker. I was seeing 14.2 oftentimes, dipping into the high 13's, with the occasional foray into the high 12's when sitting and idling at high temps. Ran better than I remember!

Put the E B R in for the next 100 miles. Rarely sees 14.x now, runs around 13.6/13.7 mostly. Noticed it dipping lower at long idles in hot temps, but not into the 12's where I would expect it to.

Tempted to just stop watching the volts and ride it! I like the way it runs with the E B R unit much better, but just hoping it isn't creating issues. Michael assured me mine would work w/ the subharness and relay.

hell yeah, ride it unless you have issues. the only real issue i had was a few short runs downtown one night with the old lady. after ther 3rd kill and restartt, click....click....click. batt too discharged to start. that is the only reason i startted looking and paying atention to the voltage.

Gemini - IDK about these hex? values you speak of. Are suggesting a few table field values fixes to restore the virtues of the Erik Buell Racing ECM's VR control?

I asked Erik Buell Racing on my last re-flash to do make the VR behave like stock and apparently they didn't, couldn't or wouldn't, IDK.

This make's me wonder a bit about my Erik Buell Racing ECM.On my ride two weekends ago,I was seeing 14.2-13.8 and it even went to 14.5 for a few minutes. It' very stable even while at idle and low rpm.

I am seeing this also, I installed my ebr ecm on the weekend and I am happy with it, it is cooler and runs better at low rpm....
But i have scene my battery light come on a few time after I stop and start the bike. Haven't has it not start yet but I never saw the light once with the old ecm. I also plug my bike in each night.

Is the light telling me the bat is getting low?

your 08 have a charging overlay harness in it? this only effects the 09-2010 with the stator cooling relay overlay harness

Urban riding last night with OEM ECM back in
You can hear the starter hitting with just a bit more cranking speed, it starts well and battery light has gone away.

IDK anything correct me as I digress...I am thinking the ecm vr pushes the battery up to a certain voltage and then does the leg shutdown cooling maneuver? The ebr ecm uses the stator less because it doesn't push the battery to as high a voltage before it does it's shutdown cooling maneuver?

Can you calculate a value that pushes the battery voltage higher than OEM to an 'Urban/Death Valley in July' standard?

it will depend on your ebr ecm. on my ecm, it wasn't setup for stator control at all. so i was always running only two legs of charging.

with the stock layout, as long as bat voltage is at least 12 volts, the normal on/off vs rpm is used. if batt volts fall below 12 volts (as long as stator control is turned on), you will get all three legs charging no matter what rpm you are running.

i have noticed that my version of the ebr ecm, uses a slightly different fan logic than the stock ecm. the stock ecm will change to fan speed relative to both batt voltage and engine temp. the ebr ecm only relies on engine temp. meaning when the bike is warm/hot and voltage is geting lower, the fan will still be "turned up" causing even more draw on the charging system compared to the stock layout.

hope that helps a little

So I take it back, i am not all that happy with my ebr Ecm. It is cooler and runs better at low rpm's.

But my 08 1125 left me stranded today for the first time. I road to work today about 15 mins, rpm's between 4 and 8k. I don't run high beams and didn't need my heated grips today. I park, go to work and all is good.

I come out to go home and I turn bike on, noting on the dash, won't even turn over 1 bit. I turn it off, in very dim view i see system voltage, try a few more times nothing, now i don't even see system voltage...

So I finally find a nice guy who has cables to give me a boost. Won't comppletelyturn over at first but I let it charge up for a bit and it finallydoes. I leave it hooked up for a little bit and drive home, trying to keep my rpm's up.

I get home and let bike sit for 1 min on, bat light come on. I turn it off and back on about 3 times. Starts each time bat light is on. So it looks like itdid charge on my drive home. Check engin light comes on, i turn it off and restart, check engine light goes off...

So.... U guys think i should take out the ebr ECM? Why would my bike battery completely die just sitting for like 6 hours? I seem to always worry about my stater, but the bike did charge on the way home.

I wish i could have the ebr ECM and all the good things about it and not get stranded...

Thanks guys
Kyle

Kyle, I doubt your issue was ECM related.

Are you sure you had the key set to off or lock when you got to work? If you accidentally left it On or Park it will leave the lights on, and as result drain the battery.

Use a battery tender or charger to charge it back up, and then use a multimeter to see if you have any parasitic draw.

Using the built in PIN/security system will cause the battery to drain if left for extended periods of time.
