I'd like to put a steering damper on my 1125r but just can't justify spending $400-$500 on a setup. More than a few bikes have Ohlins steering dampers on them from the factory, but they're supposedly not as good as the aftermarket Ohlins dampers and therefore worth less. I don't need a high end damper, I just need something to quell the occasional headshake. I'd like to be able to buy the Ohlins mounting hardware (hopefully $150 or less) and then Ebay an oem Ohlins damper on the cheap and bolt it up for a lot less than a brand new kit would cost. I emailed EB R and they asked what the measurements were on the damper I was going to buy, but since I haven't bought one, I don't know. Has anyone bought the 1125r Ohlins kit and taken the time to measure the damper itself? Thanks! | ||

The stock dampers aren't worth putting on your bike, IMHO. You would be better off to learn to keep your touch light on the bars and deal with the nervous nature of the bike. The Erik Buell Racing Ohlins damper kit is nice and well made. I think you are in for a lot of manual labor to try to create the hardware bits that are rigid enough to do a good job, and you'd not save much money unless you happen to be a machinist with a bunch of stock lying around... | ||

I don't want to try to fabricate my own mounts, I want to use the Ohlins 1125r mounting kit but find a cheap oem Ohlins damper on Ebay. I am definitely not capable of machining my own mounts. I realize that the oem Ohlins stuff isn't nearly as good as aftermarket Ohlins, but something would be much better than nothing. I've had several Suzukis with oem Suzuki dampers (probably not any better than oem Ohlins) and they were all morethan sufficient for my riding. | ||

I got one.I don't have my calipers with me but it looks like th small tube is 1/2" diameter and the larger tube is a tad over 3/4".The length of the tubes is 5 7/8" and the rod in the middle is 9 3/8" from the flat end to the center of the hole.Word of advice.Save up and buy the whole set up. | ||

Why do you recommend saving up for the kit with the damper? the reason being: youre wasting time and money. the ohlins damper for the 1125 is incredibly well priced, and well worth the money. i bought mine from a race take off from another dude right here on badweb in the classifieds. keep your eyes peeled and youll find a great deal like i did($300). its not worth doing if its not worth doing right. just like so many other things in life, this is one of them. you are going to save $50 bucks when everything is all said and done to get less performance and adjust ability, while in the mean time, you wasted a LOT of extra time and effort and frustration because you didnt want to spend the money. spending 400-500 on a good setup is worth a lot more than spending 300 on a crappy setup. If I could find an Ohlins damper for $300, I'd do it. I guess I just need to keep my eyes peeled more. Every time I've searched on Ebay, all that I find are the GPRs and I don't like the way they look. |
