When hot checking the oil on a 2010 engine, should the bike be on the side stand or held upright?

I followed the manual to the letter, but it doesn't specifically say if the oil level should be read on the side stand or upright.

When it's on the side stand, nothing shows in the sight gauge. But if I stand it upright, it's right in the between the upper and lower lines.

From the manual...

quote:

Hot Check

1) To bring the motorcycle to normal operating temperature, ride the motorcycle for a least 10 minutes and 5 miles 8 kilometers .

2) Park the motorcycle on the sidestand while idling and remove the oil fill plug.

3) Idle the engine one (1) minute. Shut off the engine.

4) Read the oil level in the sight gauge.

a) Below the lower line: Add oil in 3.4 fl oz 0.1 L increments until the level is between the upper and lower lines. Refer to Recommended Engine Oils.

b) Between the upper and lower lines: It is safe to operate the motorcycle.

c) At (or above) the upper line: Drain oil at 6.8 fl oz 0.2 L increments until the oil level is between the lines.

5) Install the oil fill plug.

Dk, I let it idle on the sidestand, just like the manual says. But it doesn't say how to position the bike when reading the sight gauge.

The reason I ask is because it shows nothing when on the side stand and it's perfect when I stand it upright.

I know on Ducatis, the sight glass reading is only valid when the bike is upright.

Cool, I'll go with upright.

I just changed the oil & filter per the manual, so I know exactly how much I put in. I didn't want to keep adding oil just to find out I put way too much in.

Thanks : )

I've got a 2010 motor on my bike and it is read on the side stand. If the bike is not completely warmed up you will not get much in the window. After an oil change with what the manual says to put in on a cool bike it will be right at the lower mark. If you run it hard it will get up to the top mark.

Do what the manual says it is correct.

If I read those instructions, I would be dead certain that it was meant to be checked while on the sidestand.

There is absolutely nothing in those instructions to indicate that you are to read it while upright.
