Jinxed myself yesterday by making a comment about how my '09R had been trouble free for 3,100 miles ... That changed by 3,112 miles - Stator looks to be toast.

Battery light came on, toggled to battery voltage and could see it discharging, and just moments later as I was pulling in the drive, "System Voltage" was on my display.

Surprised how little warning (none) one gets. Normally I'd be 60 miles of twisties away from home, but got lucky yesterday as I was coming from my work office nearby.

My sub-harness was installed about 1,000 miles back, all seemed fine. Fingers crossed on parts availability! Oh well, guess I'll get caught got up on home projects ...

Mike

P.S. My '09R lives on a battery tender, spends a healthy portion of its time above 5K revs, and is properly maintained. I love this bike!!

Hope I'm not jinxing myself here but... 13,600 miles with the original wiring harness and the original stator...

2009 1125R

Maybe I got the good one?

Oh no Mike! Did u take it to Cycle Connection? I took mine in this morning for the same problem. Battery light came on and the engine light found along with the message on the instrument cluster. Urs must have been the other one of the two they where talking about with charging system problems. Good luck! Go across the street and put in a good word for me would ya. : )

Hey there! Yep, it will be going to Cycle Connection - I like those folks, beyond just one being a great neighbor. They'll come pick it up, get it fixed, and bring it back.

If I hadn't of been busy this weekend, I would have taken it myself today. Then again, I wasn't sure the battery would last long enough to drive it up the ramp into my pick-up!

So yours isn't there yet. Billy the advisor was telling me that they had a couple of them there already with charging system problems.

They good people down there. Dennys HD does seem to want to have anything to do with Buell up here in Springfield.

Mike is lives in Joplin or around that area also. There are several 1125's in Springfield area as well. Me and a friend populated the area with 1125's last year at about this time. We brought back seven of them from Texas for area people during the fire sale.

Sorry for the thread hijack Mike. : )

budgolf, have u had any charging system problems yet?

No hijack - We're all Buell guys! I live in Springfield, and will drive by any/all of the local joints to go to Cycle Connection.

Jeff, did you have the charging sub-harness installed when that letter came out? I did, just curious if you did or not.

From what I can tell, doesn't seem to make much difference since stators still fail. Haven't heard of many '08 failures?

Yeah sorry to hijack your thread guys. I'm from Joplin, but the Army keeps me at Ft Bragg NC.

I haven't had any charging issues. I've got an 08 though, I had thought the electrical problems were limited to the 09/10 models. Clutch weep started a couple of weeks ago though.

Hope you guys get it figured out.

Update had not been done, stock as a rock. I had the Erik Buell Racing ECM in when it happened. Took it out to take it in for the repairs.

Yeah, very peculiar how my stator was fine with no apparent issues, then within 4-6 weeks after the harness, the stator is now burnt out. Someone posted that a damaged stator will be finished off by the harness and now with my experience, I must agree. Why would a damaged stator be worse off with the harness?

There is a thread here somewhere where a guy discovered that that the stator isn't getting good oil flow due to a big glob of rtv protecting some wires in there. Might see if it applies to you bro.

Fresnobuell, here's a possible reason for the stator going after the harness. Sounds like the stator is divided into 3 legs. If you've been riding without the harness, you could have already been on 2 good legs, one being bad. The harness apparently shuts down one leg to keep it cooler during idle, when there is low oil flow and air flow through the radiators and oil cooler. If the ECM is cutting out 1/3, with 1/3 already bad, there you go, it will overheat. Another thing I read too, is the stator could already be in an overheated state before the harness, with a high failure rate to follow.
Just throwing it out there, no expert here, just theory.

Hopefully, you'll be lucky like I was and one will be in stock. It sounds like inventory is becoming more available as time goes by.

Dealer says the parts are available. Better be right cause I passed on buying an XB this weekend. If i knew my R would be on the shelf for a while, I would have been much more inclined to buy it.}

If I have any discomfort, it's just from years of knowing swapping parts is usually a stop-gap measure if they're being put into what could be a poor design.

When you're not talking about isolated incidents, a simple R/R buys some time but doesn't get to the core of the problem. But there's no charge for hope!

From what I understand, the vast majority of stator failures are happening AFTER the harness swap, is that true?

Mine does not have the harness upgrade. But I haven't found out what is wrong yet. Battery light, followed by a CEL and then a message in the cluster. All in that order.

Mine happened after the upgrade, but I suppose one could make a case (true or not) that damage was done in the nearly 2K miles I put on it before the charging sub-harness was installed. Who knows ... Just fix it!

Jeff, mine's still in my garage. I'm in Orlando on business until Saturday. If CC can sync with my wife's schedule this week (not easy!) they'll pick the bike up. If not, I'll deal with it when I'm back.

I don't believe there is any data that the stator has been damaged after installation of the fix. But a damaged stator will suffer with the fix as circuits are turned off, so it may appear that the fix caused the problem.
At least that's how it looks to me.

I agree with u Daniii, I think the damage is already done before the "fix" is put on. But people are going to argue that fact as well because people are having problems after they get a new stator, regulator and the harness upgrade. I'm with Mike, just fix it!

Mike, have a safe trip home!

I just got off the phone with the dealer and they told me that the bike is charging just fine now and they seem to think that the charging system upgrade harness is going to fix my problem? I brought it in with a battery light, CEL and a message center saying something about the charging system.

I'm confused!!!!

Spoke the dealer about my stator and he mentioned there is 100% post-harness failure rate on the bikes he has done the harness "fix"

Red93stang - when you get it start it up and test the he^^ out of it within a few miles of dealer, so if it goes down you won't be too far away.

I am going to a new dealer for my charging problem.

The new service department didn't even question my diagnosis. Unfortunately, their Buell specialist is booked up until Thursday (I called on Monday). It sounds like he has a whole set of stators to replace.
